NEW YORK 1870 CENSUS

 

ELIZA PUTNAM  Albany W2, Albany County

She is 50 NY living with a Lee family from Canada. She was boarding here in 1860 as well. She was a nurse then, probably still is.

 

CATALINA PUTNAM  Albany W8, Albany County

She is 67 NY keeping house and widowed. Her son James Van Buren Putnam 29 NY and married daughter Calista Carter 33 NY are at home with her. Catalina Van Buren was married to James Janse Putnam in Amsterdam, Montgomery County in 1860. James was a son of John Arent Putman and Magdalena Visscher from there. James was born July 8, 1803 and died in Tribes Hill, Montgomery County March 29, 1866. Catalina was born in Troy, New York April 9, 1804 and will die March 6, 1872. The son James was born March 27, 1842 and will die here in Albany in September 1885. Dutch family of course.

 

DAVID PUTMAN  Albany W6, Albany County

He is 30 NY and an office clerk. His wife Henrietta Wilson is 25 NY and they have Henry 3 months old. They live with her folks Abraham and Henrietta Wilson. David Madison Putman is a son of Aaron Mathew Putman and Maria C. Haight and was born in Schenectady and will die in Charleston, Montgomery County New York. They are here in 1875. The son Henry will have died by then, but they will have another one in 1875. Dutch family.

 

JAMES A. (ANGUS) PUTNAM  Albany W8, Albany County

He is number 1403, a son of David and Jennette Putnam. He is still running a butcher shop, and is 69 NY, Nancy Sickles, his wife, 53 NY, Mary Ann 26 NY, Theodore B. 25 NY, James A. Junior 23 NY, Stephen 20 NY and David 14 NY. Also still here is Mary Morgan 70 NY. Still can’t figure her out, see the listing back in 1860. Anyway, James will die here shortly on December 2, 1874. The kids will be around, but few if any ever married.

 

PETER PUTNAM  Albany W10, Albany County

He is a tailor, 60 NY, his son Peter 30 NY, Abby 28 NY, Clara 32 NY and Anna (Gertrude in 1860) 17 NY. Now, they were here in 1860. Then Abby (then age 44) was his wife. I think this listing is screwed up, and Abby is still his wife at age 58 NY probably. Been here since the 1830s, and still no clue as to who he is. Gotta be Dutch though with the name Peter.

 

JANE PUTNAM  Albany W10, Albany County

She is 40 IRE, Catherine 16 NY. They live with a Gaffney family from Ireland who are probably her folks. Don’t spot these folks in the 1860.

 

C. (CATHERINE) B. PUTNAM  Bethlehem, Albany County

She is 13 NY and lives with P. E. and Harriet Elmendorf family as an adopted daughter. She was here with them in 1865

 

ELIZA PUTMAN  Cohoes W2, Albany County

She is 36 NY, Georgiana 17 NY and Etta 9 NY. She has a bunch of boarders. Don’t find them before or since. The daughter Georgiana was born August 2, 1852 and will marry George William Stearns in July 1874. He was born March 4, 1845.

 

GEORGE PUTMAN  Rensselaer, Albany County

He is 36 NY, Mary 30 NY.

 

JOSEPH PUTNAM  Rensselaer, Albany County

He is 27 NY, Bernette or something 25 NY. He and the above George are probably brothers.

 

EMMA PUTMAN  Green Island, Albany County

A very light, hard to read page. She is 25 NY, has a daughter 3 NY, a daughter (Jennie in 1880) 1 NY and a son 1/12 NY. She and Jennie will be here in 1875 and 1880.

 

A. (ARCHELAUS) PUTNAM  Willing, Allegany County

He is 76 VT (should be NH), and his daughter Amanda 44 NY. They live with a Parker family. The wife Josephine 40 NY is probably another daughter. According to Eben’s notes, he had three daughters. One was named Sophronia who married Abraham Martin Parker. Archelaus has been here in the County since the 1830s. Missed out on the 1860 listing though.

 

IRA PUTMAN  Wirt, Allegheny County

Been here all his life, Dutch folks. He is now 31 NY a tin peddler, Eliza Jane Glover, his wife, 28 NY, John E. (Elson) 10 NY, Harriet 8 NY, Frank L. (Lowell) 2 NY. Her mother Cornelia Glover 70 NY is still living with them, probably will till she dies. His dad John is here in town, as are his brothers. They are all listed next.

 

NATHANIEL PUTMAN  Wirt, Allegany County

He is Nathaniel Woods Putman 33 NY and works on his dad’s farm, Mary Louise Babcock, his wife, 22 NY and they have William 3 NY. Nate will die here July 10, 1874. Mary will then marry A. S. Allen and be here in 1880.

 

JOHN HENRY PUTMAN  Wirt, Allegany County

He is 58 NY and is alone since Hannah Cornwell his wife died in 1863. He will be here until 1891 when he chucks it in.

 

ORSON PUTNAM  Colesville, Broome County

Orson Freeman is a son of Martin Gilmore Putnam and Clarissa Parsons. He was born here, and is now 28 NY and operating a hotel, Amelia Throop, his wife, 23 NY and Hubert (Herbert) 3 NY. They will be in Merrick County, Nebraska by the 1880 census.

 

DAVID PUTNAM  Colesville, Broome County

David Henry is another of Martin’s sons. He is a farmer 24 NY and his wife Jane Penney is but 16 NY.

 

FRANK (FRANKLIN) PUTNAM  Colesville, Broome County

He is a son of Seth Putnam and his first wife Jane Hall. He is now 54 NY and has his son Frank 17 NY with him. His wife Esther Baker has died in the past decade. He now lives with George and Mary Jane Fuller. Mary Jane (26 NY) is his daughter. He is widowed here still in 1880.

 

HORACE PUTNAM  Colesville, Broome County

Another one of Seth’s kids, but he never married. He is now 51 NY and boarding with a Haynes family. Horace was at home in Sanford in 1850, but the family wasn’t indexed in 1860. His stepmother Roxy Underwood is still back there though. Now, he lives next door to his brother Martin.

 

MARTIN PUTNAM  Colesville, Broome County

Seth’s son is now 56 NY (should be VT), Clarissa Jane Parsons is 52 NY, Angeline (Augusta) 16 NY, Eugene 11 (should be 14 see 1860) NY and Anna A. 9 NY.

 

ROXY PUTNAM  Sanford, Broome County

Roxanna Underwood was the second and last wife of Seth Putnam. She is now 78 NY and lives with Peter and Minerva Underwood. Peter is a son of her first marriage.

 

CHARLES PUTMAN  Windsor, Broome County

He is 26 NY and his wife Sarah Elizabeth Crosby is 21 NY. He is Charles Edwin Putnam, a son of Miles Putnam and Marilla Terry. The family was in Pennsylvania in 1850 and back in Broome County in 1860. Miles’ folks were Seth Putnam and Jane Karr Hall from Springfield, Windsor County, Vermont. Charles served in the Union Army as a horseman under Sheridan and Custer and then was a medical assistant in Washington DC until the end of the war. He first married Sarah Elizabeth Crosby here in Broome County. They will move to Nebraska where she will die in the mid 1870s. He then married Jennie Rickerson in 1879. They will have two children before she dies in 1883 or 1884. By 1900 he will be remarried again to Julia Hill. He will be in Red Cloud, Nebraska through the 1920 census, and will die in Hot Springs, South Dakota August 2, 1932. He’ll have four wives all told.

 

SYBAL PUTNAM  Windsor, Broome County

Sibyl Lilly is the widow of Nathan Putnam who was here in 1850 and, like several others, not indexed in 1860. She is now 79 NY and living with a Whitman family.

 

JOSEPH PUTNAM  Great Valley, Cattaraugus County

He is a laborer 29 NY, Jane Elise Brown 25 NY, John 6 NY and William 4 NY. He is a son of the upcoming John Putnam and first wife Sarah Ann Learn. He was born here and with the family in 1850 here. They will be here in 1880 too.

 

JOHN PUTMAN  Humphrey, Cattaraugus County

Been here since the 40s, a son of Peter Putman and Mary Waters. They were here in 1850 and overlooked in 1860. He is now 59 NY, Mary Ann Learn, his wife, 47 NY. They only had one son, Joseph who is over in Great Valley.

 

EDWIN PUTNAM  Randolph, Cattaraugus County

He is 16 NY and, along with some 20 other fellas, in the Chamberlain Institute, what ever that is.

 

ELIPHALET PUTNAM  Auburn W6, Cayuga County

Eliphalet Fox is still making sashes and blinds here in Auburn. He is now 63 MA, Jane Conklin his third wife is 45 NY, and they still have Frederick 10 NY who is at school. Also there are Frances and Joseph Conklin. Joseph is her son by her prior marriage, Frances is his wife.

 

ALFRED PUTNAM  Brutus, Cayuga County

He is a son of Lewis and Emeline (born here October 16, 1835), and married (November 22, 1860). He is now 34 NY, Carrie Weed, his wife, 29 NY, Anna 8 NY and Lewis Weed 2 NY. They won’t have any more kids so will miss out in the 1880 census. He is a farmer.

 

ALONZO PUTNAM  Brutus, Cayuga County

He is Alonzo Lewis Putnam, Asa and Louisa’s son and is also now married. He is a carpenter 46 NY, Mary Ann Babcock 40 NY. He was born here October 22, 1822 and married Mary Ann here December 19, 1860. They will not have any children. They are in Auburn in 1880.

 

ASA PUTNAM  Brutus, Cayuga County

He was indexed as A. A., and is Lewis Senior’s son. He is now 72 NY and still farming, Louisa Storke is 61 NY.  He will be ‘gored to death’ by a bull August 6, 1872. Louisa will be widowed here in 1880 living with her daughter Lucinda.

 

HARVEY PUTNAM  Brutus, Cayuga County

He was indexed as Hiram, but is Asa’s son Harvey. He is now 36 NY, and Electa Andrews is also 36 NY.

 

ROBERT PUTNAM  Brutus, Cayuga County

Another son of Lewis senior. He is 70 NY, Abigail Huntington his third wife is 52 NY. They have Arthur 8 NY.

 

JACOB PUTNAM  Brutus, Cayuga County

He is 31 NY, Sarah Clark 29 NY. Also there are her folks Luke Clark 62 NY and Elizabeth Clark 63 NY. Jacob junior was born in Cato November 9, 1839 and married Sarah here October 31, 1867. He is a son of Jacob Putman and Hannah Lewis from Cato, Cayuga County. His dad just died back there in 1867. Strange to see a Dutch guy stuck in here with all the others who are New Englanders, but Sarah was from here and he married her shortly after returning from the Civil War. They won’t have any children, and will soon move to Hannibal, Oswego County and still be there in the 1920 census.

 

JAMES E. PUTMAN  Brutus, Cayuga County

He is a farmer 41 NY, Amanda Remington 35 NY, Addie 16 NY, Maria 12 NY and George (listed Ernest in 1860) 10 NY. He is a son of Robert Putnam and was born here. He will die here September 1, 1877. These are the only kids they will have. George Ernest will die here in 1886.

 

LEWIS PUTNAM  Brutus, Cayuga County

He is now 68 NY. Emeline McGee is now 60 NY. They have O. F. and Josephine Atwood living with them. Josephine (28 NY) is their daughter. She was at home in 1860 and off somewhere in 1850.

 

FRANK PUTNAM  Brutus, Cayuga County

Francis is another son of Lewis and Emeline. He is now 38 NY and a farmer. His wife Marietta Remington 32 NY and Ernest A. 8 (only 11 in 1880, probably 8/12 now) NY. He was born here July 7, 1832 and married Marietta October 23 1861. They will be here in 1880, and Marietta will be widowed here in 1900. By then, Brutus will have been renamed Weedsport.

 

ISAAC PUTNAM  Cato, Cayuga County

He is a carriage maker 39 NY, Mary Jane Platt, his wife, 22 NY and young Fred is 1 NY. He was born here in Cato in 1832, a son of Jacob Putman and Hannah Lewis. He married Mary Jane in 1868. He will die in 1871 and Mary is widowed in Elbridge, Onondaga County in 1875,  Dutch like everyone in town.

 

SEBASTIAN PUTNAM  Cato, Cayuga County

Yet another one of Jacob and Hannah’s sons. Sebastian Gonsolvus is 49 NY. His sons Frank S. 25 NY, Harry S. 23 NY and Isaac L. (Lewis) 16 NY are at home. Sebastian was born back in Tribes Hill, Montgomery County on April 11, 1820, and he will die in Jordan, Onondaga County February 21, 1891. He Married Philinda M. Ewell in 1842, and she has just died here September 22, 1869.

 

AARON W. PUTNAM  Owasco, Cayuga County

He is 54 NY, Mary Ann 39 CAN and William A. 1 NY. He was single in Auburn in 1850. No idea who he is.

 

FRANK PUTNAM  Spring Port, Cayuga County

He is 18 NY and at the Friends Academy here. He is a son of David Dense Putman from Venice, Cayuga County. He was home there in 1860 and is also listed there now in 1870. Just away at school.

 

DAVID PUTMAN  Venice, Cayuga County

David Dense is now 47 NY, Theresa Hunsicker, his wife, is 42 NY, Franklin 18 NY and Charles 8 NY. He is a son of Jacob and Hannah, and was in Cato in 1850. Dutch. He’ll be here until he dies in 1907.

 

RICHMOND PUTNAM  Arkwright, Chautauqua County

He is Number 2889, a son of Abner Putnam and Vesta Mallory. He was born in Stockton. He is now 48 NY, his wife Seba Barber 47 NY, George 19 NY and Edward 9 NY. They will be here through the 1900 census.

 

MORTIMER PUTNAM  Carroll, Chautauqua County

He is a son of Ephron Putnam and Phoebe Wilmarth of Ellery. He was here in Carroll in 1860, and is now 38 NY, Mary Jane Osgood, his wife, 30 NY (PA in 1860), Lizzie (Josephine in 1860, Lizzie again in 1880) 10 NY, Etta 8 NY and Clyde 6 NY. He’ll be here through the 1900. He is a carpenter.

 

SUSAN PUTNAM  Carroll, Chautauqua County

She is 33 NY and lives with an Evans family. Probably someone’s widow.

 

ALONZO PUTNAM  Charlotte, Chautauqua County

He is 37 NY and boarding. He is a butter dealer. He is the son of Olvin Putnam of Stockton. He was married there in 1860. Don’t know what happened to Christina now, but she will be in Fredonia with their son Victor in 1880, and in 1900 she will be in California.

 

EDWIN PUTNAM  Charlotte, Chautauqua County

He is number 2892, a son of Abner and Vesta. He was widowed at home with his folks in 1860, but has since married a widow Electa Ann (Montague) Wait in 1861 and the family is together now. Edwin is 46 NY, Electa 46 NY, Willie A. (William Abner) 16 NY, Mary E. 12 NY and young Edwin G. is 4 NY. He was born in 1828 and will die here September 9, 1889. The son Edwin was born in December 1865 and will die May 2, 1873.

 

HARVEY PUTNAM  Cherry Creek,  Chautauqua County

He is number 2664, a son of Joshua Putnam (1195) and Lucy Lathrop of Bethel, Vermont. Been here most of his life. He is now a retired farmer 72 VT and Rebecca Steward is 70 VT. Kids are all off on their own now, in fact they are all out of the state.

 

MARY PUTNAM  Ellery, Chautauqua County

She is 15 NY and a servant at the Haskins farm. She is a daughter of Warren Putnam here in town.

 

ELLEN PUTNAM  Ellery, Chautauqua County

She is 23 NY and a servant with a Family that kinda looks like Frenloir or something. She is another daughter of Warren and Susannah.

 

LORENZO PUTNAM  Ellery, Chautauqua County

He is 22 NY, another of Warren’s kids, and is a laborer on the Wallace farm.

 

WARREN PUTNAM  Ellery, Chautauqua County

He is a son of Ephraim Putnam (607) and Phebe Wilmarth from Washington County, but has been here for most of his life. He is now 47 NY, Susannah Carpenter 47 NY. At least one kid, Emerrette 12 NY, has stuck it out here at home. He is a manufacturer, but probably not too successful if all his kids are hired out to other families.

 

EPHRON PUTNAM  Ellery, Chautauqua County

Another of Warren’s sons. He is 26 NY a farmer, Mary Gifford, his wife, 24 NY and Delilah 2 NY. They live with Benjamin and Sonesta Brooks.

 

DAVIS PUTNAM  Ellicott, Chautauqua County

He is 27 NY and is a clerk in the hotel he lives in. He is Oscar Davis Putnam, a son of Aaron Davis Putnam of Charlotte. He was boarding in Dunkirk in 1860.

 

OREN PUTNAM  Ellington, Chautauqua County

Number 2844, a son of Andrew Putnam of Stockton. He is 63 NY, Alvira Schofield 65 NY. They live with their daughter Maria Strum (26 NY) and her family. He lists himself now as a retired farmer. Guess gave up the clergy as well.

 

HIRAM PUTNAM  Ellington, Chautauqua County

He is number 2842, one of Andrew’s sons. He is now 68 NY, Zeruah Lawrence his wife 64 VT. They are here again in 1880.

 

EDWIN PUTNAM  Ellington, Chautauqua County

He is 41 NY, Rose 31 NY and Mary 11 NY. Rose Ann Wesley is a new wife. He was married to Christina in 1860. Rose will hang in there and they will be here in 1880 and again in 1900. He is a son of Hiram Putnam and Zeruah Lawrence.

 

OLVIN PUTNAM  Ellington, Chautauqua County

Hiram’s son. In 1860 he was listed Alvin, but is Olvin. Anyway, he is now 43 NY, and has a new wife Salina Chapman 34 CT. His first wife Jane Button died here January 25, 1862. Olvin will die here December 9, 1893, but Salina will be here in the 1900 and hang in till 1918.

 

RILEY PUTNAM  Gerry, Chautauqua County

Been around here since he married and left Vermont in the late 1830s. He is now 62 VT, his wife Hannah Field is 59 VT, Helen P. 21 and Mary L.20 NY. Their son, William Riley, is now married and living in Smith Center, Kansas.

 

VARIOUS  PUTNAMS  Jamestown, Chautauqua County

Somehow the town wasn’t indexed, but there are a bunch of folks here. See the 1860 and 1880 and guess.

 

JOHN B. (BEAMAN) PUTNAM  Pomfret, Chautauqua County

He is a son of Nathan Bancroft Putnam. He is 36 MA, a farmer, Julia (Mrs. Julia B. Meigs) is 35 NY. They will soon move to Chicago and be there in the 1880, then move to New York City. He will die there in the late 1890s, and Julia will be widowed there in 1900. There weren’t any children.

 

JESSE PUTNAM  Pomfret, Chautauqua County

He is a seed peddler 31 NY, Hattie Brown 26 NY and Alice 2 NY. He is a son of Aaron Davis Putnam (3356) and was here in 1860, and in Charlotte before that. Jesse was born in Charlotte January 25, 1838. He served in the Civil War, returned here and married Harriet L. Brown August 30, 1866. They will be here through 1900, and Hattie will be widowed here in 1920.

 

AARON O. (OSGOOD) PUTNAM  Pomfret, Chautauqua County

He is 33 NY, Mary McDaniel 25 VT. He is a son of Aaron L. and Almira Putnam. He was born here May 2, 1836 and married Mary Frances McDonald of Rutland, Vermont here on July 5, 1865. They will be here through the 1890s, and Mary will be here through the 1920 census.

 

ELMIRA PUTNAM  Pomfret, Chautauqua County

Elmira Beaman is the widow of Nathan Bancroft Putnam who died here April 9, 1864. She is now 65 MA, Nathan A. 40 MA, a retired grocer, Mira A. 39 MA, Herbert J. 27 NY a grocer, and Elvira 25 NY. Elmira was born May 8, 1805 and will die here April 2, 1880. Herbert will marry Laura Hale in 1876. Nathan and Mira will never marry, and will be here through the 1900.

 

AARON L. PUTNAM  Pomfret, Chautauqua County

Nathan (Sr.)’s son is now a farmer 66 MA, Dolly O. (Almira E. Osgood) 62 MA, Hannah Jane 38 MA, Albert L. (Lawrence) 27 NY, Cornelia Maynard (Albert’s wife) 26 NY (actually WI), and Arthur C. 21 NY. Albert runs a dry goods store and his brother Arthur works for him. Albert married Cornelia A. Maynard in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on November 30, 1869. Albert was born February 12, 1843 and will die here January 26, 1890. Cornelia was born June 6, 1845 and will be here till she dies August 31, 1921. Aaron was born April 25, 1804 and will die here March 29, 1880. Dolly was born March 25, 1808 and will die shortly on August 17, 1870.

 

JOHN PUTNAM  Sherman, Chautauqua County

He is a carpenter and joiner, 57 VT, Hannah Ellis 43 MA, Carrie 15 NY, Dora 11 NY, Gertrude 9 NY and Clyde 6/12 NY. He is a son of Jacob Putnam (#1882) and Mary Burton. Been here since the 1830s and will be till he dies sometime before 1900 when Hannah is shown here as a widow. They were in Westfield in 1860 and will be in Chautauqua in 1880.

 

ROYAL PUTNAM  Stockton, Chautauqua County

He is now 61 NY, Almira Emery his wife 50 NY, Eleanor A. 20 NY and the twins Marvin and Murray are now 13 NY. He is number 2845, a son of Andrew and Azuba.

 

WELCOME PUTNAM  Stockton, Chautauqua County

Newel’s son is now 49 NY, Maria Louise Flagg his wife 48 VT, Sumner (Charles Sumner) 11 NY and Mary E. 9 NY. He will die here October 28, 1871. Maria will marry Forbes Johnson and be here in Ellery in 1880 along with young Mary.

 

DELOS PUTNAM  Stockton, Chautauqua County

He is a son of Gilbert Putnam and Thankful Rogers, and was born here July 14, 1836. He is now a farmer 34 NY, Annette Schofield 29 NY and their son Fayette 2 NY. Delos married Annette here July 8, 1862. She is from Ellery. He will soon become Justice of the Peace here in town, and become a Judge by the 1890s.

 

FANNY PUTNAM  Stockton, Chautauqua County

She is Frances Mitchell, wife of Elisha Putnam (2887) a son of Abner and Vesta Putnam. She is 53 NY, her son Albert E. 12 NY is at home. Elisha has to be around somewhere as he isn’t supposed to die until January 15, 1884. He will be widowed here in 1880. Fanny was born May 4, 1817 and will die here May 14, 1878. The son Albert or Elbert was born March 28, 1858 and will die soon on May 29, 1872.

 

CORYDON PUTNAM  Stockton, Chautauqua County

He is now 39 NY, Louisa Fuller 36 NY, Frank F. (Fuller) 14 NY, Almira L. 12 NY, Alice 9 NY. Also here is his mother Vesta Mallory Putnam 75 VT. Corydon is a son of Abner and Vesta. Louisa will die July 7, 1870 at age 36, and he will marry Celesia S. Matthewson October 8, 1871. They will be here in 1880. He is number 2894. The son Frank Fuller was born May 15, 1856 and will die here July 19, 1880.

 

ALLEN PUTNAM  Stockton, Chautauqua County

He is another of Abner’s sons. He is number 2890. He is now 46 NY MA MA, Amelia Woods, wife number 3, is 36 NY VT VT, Ernest W. 13 NY, Clayton 6 NY, Clesson, a son 6 NY, and Herbert 3 NY. His first wife Martha Walker died in 1859. He married Marilla R. Smith (September 19, 1860). She died in 1866, and he married Amelia M. Woods on April 20, 1869. They will be here in 1880. Amelia will be widowed here in the 1900.

 

CHARLES PUTNAM  Stockton, Chautauqua County

Another of Gilbert’s sons, though not listed in Eben’s numbering system. He would be kinda 2894.5. He is now 39 NY, Mary Ann Hoag 38 NY, Frank 14 NY, Lillie 12 NY, Gertrude 7 NY, Fred 5 NY and Fritz 3 NY.

 

GEORGE PUTNAM  Westfield, Chautauqua County

He is 51 VT, and widowed. His children are Lillian 22 NY, Burton 20 NY, Ida 16 NY, Bradford 14 NY and Mary 10 NY. He is a son of Jacob Putnam (#1882) and Mary Burton, and has been here most of his life. He was married in 1860 to Alpha Ann Van Vleet who has died here in 1863. In 1873, he will marry Julia Keyes. They will be here in 1880 and 1900.

 

THOMAS PUTNAM  Chemung, Chemung County

He is now 81 NH and widowed since his wife Lucy Morse died in 1865. He is still living with George and Eleanor West as he has since the 1840s. George Putnam West is an adopted son. Thomas will be here till he dies February 10, 1879 at age 90. He is a son of Thomas Putnam (452D) of Charlestown, New Hampshire.

He is a bedspring manufacturer, and is 40 MA, Bertha 25 MA, Emma J. 14 MA and John 3 MA. He is William Malcomb Putnam, and is living with his second wife Bertha Foster. He is a son of John Putnam and Adeline Joselyn of Boston. He was married to Annie Joselyn in 1855. He then married Bertha Foster March 20, 1867. They were in Boston in 1860, and by 1880 will be in Sandwich, Mass. out here on Cape Cod where I live.

She is a dressmaker 35 VT, her daughter Ella is 16 VT.

 

JOSEPH PUTNAM  Horseheads, Chemung County

He is listed as John but is a son of Silas Putnam and Martha Jordan and was married here in 1860. He is now a blacksmith 41 VT, his wife Mary (possibly Wheeler) is 40 NY and they have Clara  (Cleona) 12 NY and Willard 9 NY. His folks went to Michigan in the 1830s and this family will also be in Lenawee County Michigan by 1880.

 

CORNELIUS PUTMAN  Southport, Chemung County

He is 57 NY, a farmer, Jane 63 NY. Don’t find them in 1850 or 1860. Probably Dutch.

 

WILLIAM PUTMAN  Van Etton Township, Chemung County

He is 40 NY and a farm laborer.

 

CHARLES PUTNAM  Columbus, Chenango County

He is 17 NY and boarding with the family of John E. and Harriet Tuttle. He is a son of Daniel Webster Putnam and Mary Jane Hudson. He and the family were here (New Berlin) in 1860. His dad was killed in the Civil War in 1863. No idea where the rest of the family is now though. He will be married in Madison County in 1880, and in Oneida County with a second wife in 1900. Then they will be in Madison County in 1910 and 1920.

 

CORNELIA PUTNAM  Mooers, Clinton County

She is 27 NY, Flora 9 VT, Walter 6 VT and Henrietta 1 NY. She is Cornelia Meyers. She has just married Cornelius Lewis Putnam, Alva’s son. These kids are with his first wife Lucy Haskins (although Henrietta may be hers). Don’t know where Corny is, probably back in Vermont wrapping up things. They will all be together here in 1880 with some more kids. Then in the 1880s, they will go to Wardsboro, Vermont and remain there all their lives. They will be there in the 1900 census.

 

ALVA PUTNAM  Mooers, Clinton County

He is now 63 NY, a carpenter and joiner, Maria Call his wife 54 NH, William 21 NY and Mary 13 NY. Been here a while now, but got missed in the 1860. Maria will die here February 25, 1879. He will then marry Harriet D. Brisbin here in Mooers on October 15, 1881. He will be here until he dies January 19, 1896.

 

LYMAN PUTNAM  Peru, Clinton County

He is 32 NY, Esther Hanson 22 NY and they have Curtis 1/12 NY. He is a son of Archelaus Putnam and Deborah Kimball. He was born here. His folks are from Wilton, New Hampshire. They will be here in 1880, and he will be widowed here by 1900. Spent all his life right here.

 

AARON PUTNAM  Peru, Clinton County

Another of Archelaus’ sons. He is now 52 NY a laborer, his wife Jane Ormsby is 55 NY. Still at home are Melvin 20 NY, Archelaus 18 NY, Israel 12 NY. His son Arthur lives next door. The son Melvin will be in Missaukee County, Michigan by 1880, and then back here by 1900.

 

ARTHUR PUTNAM  Peru, Clinton County

Aaron’s son is now 24 NY a laborer and his wife Emma Jane Andrews is 25 NY. They are here through 1910 and Emma till 1920 and later.

 

EPHRAIM PUTNAM  Schuyler Falls, Clinton County

He is a son of Archelaus Putnam and Deb Kimball. He was single here in 1860, and is now married. He is a retail grocer 39 NY, Sarah Ayers his wife 35 NY. He is in Nashua, New Hampshire in 1880, and Sarah is here in 1880. Don’t find either in 1900. Sarah is here in 1910 but no Ephraim.

 

GEORGE PUTNAM  Hillsdale, Columbia County

He is 28 NY, Augusta 28 NY, George junior 8 and Arthur 7. He is a son of Isaac Putnam and Lucinda Church from Berkshire County, Mass. The family was all here in 1860, he is all that’s left here now, and he’s outa here shortly himself, but may still be here. He is in Bridgeport, Connecticut in 1900.

 

HAMILTON PUTNAM  Cortlandville, Cortland County

He is now listing himself as a retired farmer. He is 62 NY, Jennette Cleveland, his wife, 55 NY and John C. (Cleveland) 14 NY is still at home. The other son, Samuel Cleveland, has just gotten married and is currently in Wisconsin. He’ll be back here in 1880 and then off to Oregon.

 

WILLIAM PUTNAM  Cuyler, Cortland County

He is a shingle maker 48 NY. His wife Rachel is 41 NY and they have Amelia 17 NY, Jerome 14 NY, Eugene 12 NY, Fanny L. 9 NY and Emma S. 4 NY. They were here in 1860, but it was part of Cayuga County Then. Rachel will be remarried in 1880 and have most of the kids with her in Truxton. By 1880 William will be in Madison County and the daughter Fanny will be there with him.

Calvin’s son, William Wallace Putnam, is now 41 NY, Philinda Pierce his wife 40 NY, Fred W. 13 NY and John 9 NY. Also here is Philinda’s mother Polly Pierce 82 MA. Bill will be here until he dies in 1896.

She is 17 NY and lives in the County Poor House. She is listed as an idiot.

She is 35 NY and living with William and Nancy Park. No ideas, except there was a Kendall Putnam around here in 1850, but that’s really it.

 

JOHN PUTNAM  Amenia, Dutchess County

He is 45 NH, Laura Submit Hall, his wife, 40 NY, Minnie 16 NY, Kate 14 NY and Dulcy 12 NY (really is Drury a son who was born February 2, 1858 and will die here April 8, 1881). He is John Woodbury Putnam (2758), a son of John Putnam (1235) and Almira French of Croydon, New Hampshire. He was born there April 6, 1825, and married Laura there October 7, 1852. They are here in 1880 and John will die here February 2, 1897. In 1900, Laura will be widowed, and living with her then married daughter Kate.

He is a railroad foreman. He is 38 CAN, Rebecca 28 NY and Frances 4 NY. They will be in Binghamton, Broome County in 1880.

He is 4 NY and black. In 1880, he will be here with his mother Hannah.

 

L. S. (LUKE SPENCER) PUTNAM  Poughkeepsie, Dutchess County

He is 50 VT, Emeline Tompkins 43 CT, Howard B. 20 CT and Lillie Belle 14 CT. They were in Amenia in 1860, and as I told you then, have moved over here by the Hudson and run the Morgan House Hotel here in town. He’ll be here till he dies in August 1880. By 1900, everyone is gone from here. The son Howard will be a few miles away in Hudson, Columbia County.

He is a Congressional Minister 34 born in Montgomery County, his wife Mary Ann McKinley is 31 born in Otsego County, Mary Ann. Jr. 10 born in New York County, Gracie C. 5 born in Dutchess County.Grace will not make itto 1875. David Israel Putman is a son of John F. and Elizabeth Putman from Hartwick, Otsego County, NY. Elizabeth is a Putman too and both from the New York Dutch family.

She is Mary Ann Flood, 60 NY and lives alone. She is the widow of William Putnam, and they were in Alden, Erie County in 1850, and she was widowed here in 1860. William was a son of John Putnam (1083) and Anna Penniman of Grafton, Mass.

He is a butcher and is boarding. He is 20 NY, and a son of the above Mary Ann and William Putman.

 

T. T. (THOMAS TILLINGAST) PUTNAM  Sardinia, Erie County

He is a son of Robert Putman and Phoebe Tillinghast. He was out boarding in 1850 and 1860. Dutch. He is now a farmer 36 NY, Colonette (Nettie Simmons) 32 NY and Mary E. 6 NY. He was born here in 1833 and got married in 1853.

 

FRANCIS PUTMAN  Buffalo W2, Erie County

He is 26 NY, Ellen Rose his wife 26 NY. He is a clerk and is boarding. Handwriting was poor. I think he is 28 or so as he states 40 NY MA MA in 1880 when they are still here. He is a son of Sardis Barnes Putnam and Dorcas Starr from Becket, Mass., then Cayuga County. They are here in 1880 and in Chenango County by 1900. He is widowed in Livingston County in 1910.

He is a retired merchant 62 NY, Phoebe his wife is 60 VT.

Still here, still no idea how he fits into things though. He is 51 NY, a cartman (still with the railroad), Sarah 42 NY, Harriet 17 NY and Loretta 13 NY. They will be here in 1880, and Sarah will be widowed here in 1900, living with her daughter Loretta.

He is a saloon keeper 23 NY, Emily 31 (actually 21) NY and Dora 9 (probably only 1) NY. He is a son of Henry Putnam, and was here at home in 1860. They will still be here pumping out beer in 1900.

He is a blacksmith 26 NY, Ida 19 NY and Alice 9/12 NY.  He is a son of William Putnam and Mary Ann Flood. He was at home in Marilla in 1860, and will be there in 1880 and 1900.

 

JAMES O. (OSBORNE) PUTNAM  Buffalo W4, Erie County

He is 51 NY, Kate Wright, his second wife, 34 NY, George P. (Palmer) 27 NY, Harriet 24 NY, James W. (Wright) 10 NY, Harvey W. (Wright) 6 FRANCE, and Frank C. 1 NY. James is a son of Harvey Putnam (1729) and Myra Osborne of Attica, NY. James graduated from Yale. He is now listed as a retired lawyer, but will be the Postmaster in Buffalo and will soon be the U. S. Consul at Le Havre and then Minister to Belgium in the 1880s. That’s why young Harvey was born in France. Over there briefly. They will be here in 1880 then overseas, and then back here about 1890. They will be in the 1900 census here. James was first married to Harriet Foster Palmer back in 1842. She died and he married Kate in 1855 here in Buffalo.

He is a tanner and is 27 NY. This is just a duplicate listing. He is shown also with his folks James Osborne and Kate Putnam. George will be married and in Raritan, New Jersey by the 1880, and in New York City by 1900.

He is 72 NH and lives with Hugh and Sarah Laverty. He was here in 1860 and living with a Proctor family then.

He is 37 NY and in manufacturing, C. J. (Celinthia Jane Gates) his wife 36 NY, Nellie 12 NY and Cora May 8 NY. He is a son of Hiram Putnam and Ruhama Marshall from here. He was here in 1850, in Minnesota in the late 1850s and early 1860s. He will be here in 1880, and will next show up in San Diego County, California in 1900.

 

DANIEL PUTNAM  Essex, Essex County

Daniel Porter has moved over from Willsboro and has a new wife. He is now 63 VT, Betsy Chase 48 VT, a son still only listed as L. D. 16 NY and Alice 13 NY. Their son Albert (here in 1860) is now in De Kalb County Missouri and the son L. D. is with him there by 1880. We finally get L. D.’s name by 1910 when it is Louis D. (probably D. for Daniel). Daniel married Betsy M. Chase here August 8, 1865. She was a daughter of Samuel Clark and Elizabeth McCoy. She had been married to Reuben Chase in Madison County in 1860.

 

RUHAMA PUTNAM  Essex, Essex County

Ruhama Marshall is the widow of Hiram Putnam from here in Essex. She is now 68 NY and has Mary Moorehouse 40 NY with her. She had a Mary Ann Morton about the right age with her in 1860 as well.

He is a clerk 34 NY, Ellen Hinckley, his wife, 30 NY and Martha 2 NY. He is a son of Daniel Porter Putnam from Willsboro. They’ll be here in 1880.

 

JAMES PUTNAM  Moriah, Essex County

Been here since the 1840s. James Madison Putnam is Archelaus’ son. He is now 57 VT a millwright, Rhoda Smith 50 VT, Frances (Vanormen his daughter) 27 NY, Charles P. 23 NY and a granddaughter daughter Jessie (Vanormen) 5 NY.

 

JOHN PUTNAM  Moriah, Essex County

His name is actually Joseph Charles Putnam, but he went under the name John. He is a laborer, 24 VT, Josephine Lillie Segar, his wife 16 NY, Emma 3/12 NY. Also here are Rosalie Putnam (Rosella Charles) 54 VT his mother, and Henry Putnam 22 VT a brother. They are kids of Stephen Putnam and Rosella Charles from Franklin and then Orange County, Vermont. Their dad died there in 1864. They will all head off to Port Henry, Essex County shortly. They are there in 1880 and ‘John’ has gone back to his original middle name Charles. He will die there in 1885 as shown in the Find A Grave Index. Josephine will be widowed and living with her family there in 1900. That’s how I know her last name.

He is a jeweler and boarding. He is 23 NY. He is Charles Warren Putnam a son of James Madison Putnam and Rhoda Smith listed above in Moriah. He was in Moriah with them in 1860. And is listed here with them right now. He will be married to Amanda and they are back in Moriah Corners, Essex County in 1880.

 

DANIEL PUTNAM  Bangor, Franklin County

He is indexed as Daniel Rutman. He is still a blacksmith 57 NH, his wife Harriett is 55 NY and Nellie 15 NY. Nellie was listed as Anna Graves 5 NY in 1860, and was probably adopted by them. He is the son of Isaac Putnam and Mary ‘Polly’ Chamberlain from Cornish, Cheshire County New Hampshire. He was born there October 12, 1812. They were in St. Lawrence County in 1850 and 1860 and are still here in Franklin County in 1880.

 

HIRAM P. PUTMAN  Ephrathah, Fulton County

He is now a hotel keeper, 31 NY, Mary Ellen Gray, his wife, 35 Alfred 11 NY, Harry 6 NY, John 4 NY and George 2 NY. He was born here April 4, 1839, a son of John Peter Putman and Sarah Amelia Whitlock. By 1880, they will be in Divide, Phelps County, Nebraska. They didn’t stay long and everyone will be in Johnstown, Fulton County for 1900 census.

He is a farmer 52 NY and now widowed since Sarah died here June 9, 1867. His sons are John Fay 21 NY and Levi 14 NY. Also there is Sarah Thompson 72 NY. She might be Sarah’s mother, not certain as John’s wife was Sarah Amelia Whitlock. John will be here until he dies in 1889. He is a son of Peter Derrick Putman and Maria Eacher. In 1880, he will have a new wife named Julia Allcock.

Also there is James Reid 56 NY. He was here in 1860 married to Phebe. The family will be in La Porte County, Indiana and in Kalamazoo, Michigan by 1900. He is a son of Ebenezer George Putman and Rebecca Frayer and was born in Johnstown, New York in March 1830.

He is a farmer 40 NY, Mary E. 37 CT, Elizabeth 12 NY and Henry J. 5 NY. He was here in 1855 with his sister and brother and married here in 1860 and 1865. No idea to folks though.

 

JOHN H. (HENRY) PUTMAN  Johnstown, Fulton County

He is now 48 NY, Caroline McGregor 44 NY, John H. 20 NY, Giles 15 NY and James 9 NY. He is a son of Lodowyck Putman and Sarah Miller. His dad and brothers went off to Illinois. John will head out to Nebraska with his son James Millard in the early 1880s. He will die in Holt County, Nebraska June 30, 1900. Caroline was born here December 20, 1824 and will die in Saratoga, Holt County Nebraska May 11, 1891.

He is a blacksmith 40 NY, Catherine Ann Allen 39 NY, Allen 18 NY and Irene 14 NY. He is a son of Aaron and Eliza Putman from here in Johnstown. They were here married in 1860 and 1865.

He is 34 NY, Judith Hilton 33 NY, Mary 14 NY and Eunice 5 NY. He is David Daniel Putman and is a son of Aaron Janse and Eliza Putman and was born here December 1834. He was listed with his folks and also alone here in 1850 and then married here in 1855.

She is 39 NY, her daughter Elizabeth 14 NY. She’ll be alone in Gloversville in 1880.

He is a leather dresser 31 NY, Agnes 23 NY and young Stewart 7 NY. He was with his folks, Aaron Putman and Joanna Neff here in 1850, and single here in 1860. They will be in Gloversville in 1880.

 

PETER W. PUTMAN  Johnstown, Fulton County

He is a glove cutter, 36 NY, Margaret 35 NY, Clifford H. 10 NY, Arthur 7 NY, Edwin 5 NY and Charlotte E. 2 NY. They just moved over from Canajoharie in Montgomery County, and will be here through the 1900 census. He is the son of Philip Putman and Elizabeth Kring as shown at home in 1850 in Palatine. He lives next to the following Archibald.

 

ARCHIBALD PUTMAN  Johnstown, Fulton County

He has also moved over from Montgomery County, and was here in the 1865. He is now 52 NY, Julia Ann English his wife is 47 NY, Aaron 21 NY, Morgan 20 NY and Mary E. 14 NY. He is a son of Lodowyck (Lewis) Victor and Mary Schenk of Root. He is a kid dresser in a glove factory. Now that does not mean he is either a pedophile or dresses in little boy’s clothes Come on now, you’ve heard of kid gloves. Kinda soft leather things.

He is a farmer 23 NY, Catherine 19, Martin 19. Also here is Francis Curtin 14 NY a laborer. Aaron and Martin are sons of George Aaron Putman and Magdalena Moore of Mohawk, Montgomery County. They were home there in 1860.

He is a farmer 28 NY, Miranda 31 NY, Lafayette 5 NY, Chester B. 3 NY and Everett 1 NY. He lives next door to the next two guys, but isn’t a brother. They are here in 1880 and Miranda is widowed in Gloversville in 1900 and 1910.

He is now 51 NY, his wife Sarah Ann Hubbs 53 NY, Henrietta 18 NY, Nancy (Mary in 1860 and 1880) 17 NY and Elizabeth 15 NY. He is another son of Aaron Victor and Margaret Hallenbeck. He was born in Stone Arabia, Montgomery County April 30, 1818 and will die here in Johnstown March 9, 1909. He married Sarah Ann here December 25, 1840. She is a daughter of David Coffin Hubbs and Hannah Montanye and was born in Root, Montgomery County June 6, 1822 and will die October 17, 1889.

He is a son of Peter Derrick Putman and Maria Eacher. He was born in Ephrathah, Montgomery County December 28, 1820 and will die here in Johnstown June 14, 1893. He married Margaret in Ephrathah December 1, 1842. She is a daughter of Frederick Johannes Smith and Rebecca Margaret Hapeman and was born in Ephrathah December 1, 1823 and will die there July 24, 1892.

She is 20 NY, her brother Norman 19 NY. They live with a Hubbs family. They are children of John L. and Sarah Ann Putman from Root, Montgomery County.

He is a farmer 50 NY, Celia Smith his wife 45 NY, Edward 21 NY, Byron 18 NY, Freddie 15 NY, Delia 13 NY, Charles 10 NY, Marvin 6 NY. He is Richard Simon Putman, son of Simon Putman and Maria Keller. They were here in 1860 and 1865, in Palatine, Montgomery County before that.

He is now widowed since Sarah Quance has died. He is a farmer 59 NY. His twin daughters Emeline and Eveline are now 28 NY. He is a son of Peter (3rd) and Prudence Putnam. He was born here. He will be living with his son Monroe here in 1900 at age 88. He was born here December 4, 1811 and will die here October 3, 1901

Another of Peter and Prudence’s sons. He is 52 NY, Mary Bryan his wife 42 NY, Seymour 19 NY and Julia 14 NY. He is widowed here in 1880.

He is a son of Peter 3rd, and still lives next to his Uncle Josiah. He is now 60 NY, Sophia Huntington his wife is 51 VT, Hartson 20 NY, Lewis 18 NY and Mariann 16 NY. He is a son of Peter Putnam and Prudence Johnson. He was born here in Batavia February 21, 1810 and will die in Bethany February 28,1894. Sophia was born back in Vermont March 15, 1819 and will die in Albion, Calhoun County Michigan June 8, 1905. They were married here in April of 1840. New England Family

He was here back in 1850, and is now 43 NY, a blacksmith, Martha 26 NY and Jessie (Jenney in 1880) 3 NY. Martha is his third wife. He was married to Emmeline in the early 1850s and Julia Ann in 1860. She died in 1862. He and Martha will be here through the 1910.

He is 17 NY (CT) and boarding. He is a clerk in a hardware store. He was here with his widowed mother in 1860. His folks were Charles Simeon Putnam and Sarah Fiten from Derby, Connecticut.

 

CHARLES PUTNAM  Pavilion, Genesee County

He is 47 NY, Phoebe Clarinda Hawley his wife 36 NY, Newell 20 NY. Also here is a servant Louisa Vase 28 NY. He is a son of Franklin and Phebe Putnam, and was born in Batavia. Franklin was a son of Peter Putnam number 1080. They were in Erie County in 1850, in Wyoming County in 1860. He is still a minister, and that is why he travels around. He will die here February 1, 1878 and be buried in West Bethany. Clarinda will be back in Wyoming County and widowed by 1880. She will die June 30, 1895 and be buried here in West Bethany.

 

VALENTINE PUTNAM  Pembroke, Genesee County

He is 68 NY and lives with Ezra and Lydia Solomon. He is number 2447, a son of Caleb Putnam (1085) and was born in Rome, NY. He was here in Genesee County in 1830, in Niagara County in 1850 and living alone with the Solomons in 1860 too. I have no idea who the Solomon’s are; Lydia is not a sister, might be a daughter. In 1880, he will be in Flint, Michigan and states he is widowed.

She is 17 NY and a domestic with a Keyes family. She is a daughter of Nicholas Putman from Little Falls. She’ll still be single here in 1900.

He is now a Justice of the Peace 46 NY, his wife Mary Joslyn 41 NY and Eugene H. 21 NY, Ella or Ellen 17 NY and a boarder John Kirk, a Cooper 30 born in Germany. Jacob Sternburgh Putman is the son of William Putman and Harriet Coyne from Montgomery County. This line goes Jacob Sternburgh > William > Hendrick > Cornelius > Victor > Jan. Dutch family.

Charles Hopkins Putnam is a son of William Putman and his first wife Mercy Hopkins, and was at home here in German Flats in 1860. They’ll still be here in 1880. He is a son of Alfred Putnam and Sophia from Brattleboro, Vermont. He was born there December 15, 1812. He is a Presbyterian minister here. He is here in 1880.

She is 68 NY, Eliza 34 NY and David 27 NY. David works in the armory. She is Eve Smith, widow of David Arent Putman. She has been widowed here some time now. She and Eliza will be here in 1880. David will be married and here in town then as well.

He is 57 NY and lives with Daniel and Maria Briedenbecker. He was here on this farm in 1860. He is living with his brother in law Daniel J. Bridenbecker 35 Born in Herkimer County and married sister Maria Bridenbecker 35 Born in Montgomery County. Henry has been living here for 20 years. An online tree says that Maria (Putman) Bridenbecker was the daughter of William Putman and Harriet Conyne. William and Harriet had a son named Hendrick (or Henry) born on 31 March 1813 in Glen, Montgomery County.  Looks like a match. If this is correct then this line goes Henry W. > William > Hendrick > Cornelius > Victor > Jan. Dutch family.

She is 62 NY and living with her Van Auken in-laws. Amy (Wilse) Weller is the widow of Garret D. Putman who just died here on April 8, 1869. She will be here in 1880 too. Amy's late husband was member of the Dutch Putman Family.

She is 50 NY and lives with a Rathbone family. She was here in 1865 listed as Maria.

 

IRA PUTNAM  Adams, Jefferson County

Been here all his life. He is now 49 NY, Clarinda Hall 32 NY, Ezra 13 NY and Eunice 6 NY. Also here is his father Ezra Putnam 69 VT. His mom, Lois Thomas Putnam, died March 26, 1868. Ira will die here January 22, 1876. His wife will marry Brayton Hall, or at least be living with him in 1880.

Still here and is now 51 NY, Marietta Keech, his wife, 51 NY, Squire U. 21 NY. Also there is a Mary E. Dailey 11 NY who is the daughter of their daughter Minerva who married James Daley in 1858. Marietta will die here July 31, 1879. John will die December 18, 1894. The family is Dutch, see 1850 for the line.

She is a school teacher 17 NY and boarding with her folks, the Townsend family. She is Nancy Townsend who has just married Squire Putnam who is a son of John Adams Putman. Don’t know why he is still listed t home with his folks, but they will all be together in 1880. They were just married here on June 19, 1870.

He is 26 CAN and boarding. He’s new. The age exactly fits Robert b. 18 Feb 1844 in Merrickville, Ontario.  He is the son of Solomon Ephraim and Emily Pearson, son of Robert and Olive Tuttle, grandson of Ephron Putnam and Miriam Doty.  The only problem is he is married and having kids up on Ontario at this same time.  Maybe he is just visiting or working here on the coast right across from Ontario.

He is 45 MA a clergyman, Ellen (Eliza K. Butttrick his second wife) 38 MA, Endicott 3 NY and Alfred junior 4/12 NY. He is Alfred Porter Putnam, son of Elias Putnam (1775) and Eunice Ross of Danvers. They were in Roxbury, Mass. in 1860, and they will be back in Salem, Mass. in 1900.

She is 72 MA, Harriet 35 NY and Emily 37 NH. The daughters are both teachers. She is listed as Medesy, but is Betsy Pope, widow of Sam Putnam. Been here some 40 years now, and will be in 1880 at age 83.

He is 47 NH, Mary Esther Kellogg 44 NY. He is a secretary at a saw manufacturing Company. He is the son of Samuel Putnam and Betsy Pope. He was here at home with them in 1850. He and Mary were here in 1860 and will be in Elizabeth, New Jersey in 1880. Sam was born in Portsmouth, Rockingham County New Hampshire March 16, 1823 and will March 23 1896 and be buried in Brooklyn. He married Mary February 22,1854 in Brooklyn. According to her grave stone, she was born in New York City February 22, 1826 and died on her birthday February 22, 1900.

She is 34 NY a seamstress living with a Snyder family. She will be here in 1900 too. She is a sister of the following Ellis Putman and also a daughter of Peter and Margaret Putman. She will be here in 1880 and 1900 as well.

 

ELLIS L. PUTMAN  Springwater, Livingston County

He is a farmer 41 NY, Helen Maars Burch, his wife, 37 NY, George B. (Banister) 14 NY, Sarah F. 13 CAN, Virginia B. (Bell) 9 VA, and Arthur B. 7 NY. He will be here in 1900 as well. He is a son of Peter Putman Jr. and Margaret Saunders. They were here in the 1840s and 50s. Dutch folks. According to a DAR application of the daughter Virginia Bell, she states he lived in St. Lawrence County New York, Easton Corners, Canada, Clarksville Virginia (where she was born and named), and a few other spots in NY State. Interesting. Ellis was with his brother George William in Clarksville, Virginia in 1860 and at that time Helen was married to George. George died and Ellis married Helen. All the kids through Virginia Bell are George’s. Not sure who Arthur belongs to, but would guess based on ages that he too is George’s. George worked for the railroad and traveled all over as shown by the kids’ birthplaces. Ellis and Helen will be here through 1900.

She is 63 NY and lives with William Stoddard 59 NY. She was alone or widowed here in 1860. Don’t know who her husband was though.

 

LAVINIA PUTNAM  Lenox, Madison County

She was here in 1850 and 1860 and was married to Harvey Putnam. She is now 52 NY, and her daughters Catherine 21 NY and Mary 16 NY. These two were with their dad in 1860. She will be here in 1880 living with her then married daughter Mary. Harvey was a son of Jacob Putman from Litchfield, Herkimer County where he was born. They were here in 1860, but Lavinia was living separately. They were back together in 1865. Later in 1865 Harvey, who was a ship’s captain, was murdered by thieves attacking his ship.

He is 43 NY and has Viola 12 NY with him. Also here is Samuel Reese 63 NY. Now, look back at John and that family in Fenner in 1860 (who are also here now). You’ll get a rough idea of who Viola is. Josiah was listed as Joseph in Fenner in 1860, and is another of Aaron’s sons. Guess he kinda adopted Viola. No clue as to who Sam Reese is.

He has moved over from Fenner. He is 50 NY, Aurilla 42 NY, John 13 NY and Mary 8 NY. John was born in Montgomery County February 11, 1820 and will die in Nelson, Madison County January 11, 1891. His folks are Aaron Putman and Mary Eacher Putman from Montgomery County and then here. They’ll be here in 1880.

The full name is James Nelson Putman, keeps using different ones. He is now 56 NY and has a new wife Lydia Catherine 39 NY and a daughter Mary 8 NY. They will be here in 1880. His folks are listed above. He is a son of Arent ‘Aaron’ Fredrickse Putman and Mary Eacker from here. He was born November 30, 1813 in Currytown, Madison County and will die in Madison County in 1894. He is here in 1860. The line goes back Nelson >Aaron > Jacob > Arent Victor > Victor Janse > Jan. She is 68 NY and is indexed as Pulman but is Elmira Putnam the widow of John Putnam of Greece, Monroe County. Elmira can be found in Greece in 1850, 1855 and 1860. Before that her husband John can be found in Greece in the 1830 and 1840. She is living with daughter Eugenia and her son-in-law A.N. Whiting. In 1875 she is listed: Elmyra Putnam 73 Born Dutchess County. She is living with daughter Eugenia and her son-in-law A.N. Whiting. She is the widow of John Putnam of Greece, Monroe County.

He is a miller, 65 MA, Mary Jane Moore 52 NY, Joseph E. 9 NY and Jennie M. 8 NY. He was here in 1840 and 1850 married to Melina Sears. She died and he married Mary and they were here in 1860. The kids would be from Mary Jane’s earlier marriage. He is number 2860, a son of Peter Putnam (1286) and Susanna Keep. He was born in Townsend, Massachusetts June 27, 1806 and will be here until he dies October 1, 1877. Mary will be widowed here in 1880, and living with her mother. She will die here March 30, 1890.

In 1850 they were in Albion, Orleans County and were sons of George and Emeline Putnam. They were orphaned there in 1860 and are here now.

He now lists himself as retired. In 1880, all the kids will be here, but by themselves. John will die in 1872, Almira in 1879.

He is a blacksmith 52 NY, Charlotte Serviss his wife 53 NY, Ada 21 NY and Adelbert 18 NY. They were in Florida NY in 1850 and 1860. He is a son of Vischer Putman and Maria Balch of Mohawk. His grandmother’s name was Visscher. He and Charlotte will be in Albany in 1880.

He is a dry goods merchant, 35 NY, Hattie Ann is 34 NY. He is a son of Cornelius Hendrick Putman and Gazena Mabie of Glen. He was here in 1860. His middle name is Hendrick if you’re interested.

 

ISAAC H. PUTMAN  Amsterdam, Montgomery County

He is a coffin maker, 34 NY, Mary Russell, his wife, is 31 NY and Ida 8 NY. They are with a Dodds family. He is a son of David Putman and Nancy Dodds. These folks here are probably his grandparents. He and Mary and Ida were all in Saratoga County in 1865.

He is a farmer 63 NY, Betsy 60 NY and Jane 47 NY. He is a son of Francis Putman and Hannah Lepper from Caughnawaga. Betsy and Jane are his sisters. None of them ever married it seems.

She is Rachel Kline, widow of Teunis Putman. Teunis was a son of John Arent Putman and Magdalena Visscher. She is now 68 NY, and her daughter Maria M. (Matilda) is 42 NY. They’ll both be here in 1880.

Jay is a son of Sam’s brother Christopher and was at home in Root in 1860. He is Samuel Osborne Putman, son of Abram Putman and Hannah Osborne. He was in Root in 1860.

Nancy may be his father’s sister. At any rate, Danforth is also listed back in Root with his folks. He will be in Orleans County in 1880.

He is a cheese smoker 17 NY and is boarding. He is a son of Victor Garret Putman and was home in Amsterdam in 1860.

He is a coal dealer 48 NY, his wife Mary Margaret Consaul is 46 NY, Harriet 22 NY, John C. 19 NY, Anna 17 NY, Cora and her twin Dora are 15 NY, and Howard 11 NY. He is a son of William Putman and Harriet Conyne, and has been here all his life. He was born here on January 12, 1822.

He is a son of the above John and Mary, and lives next door now. He is a clerk in a dry goods store, 24 NY, Ellen Julia Hubbel his wife is 22 NY and they have Ada 1 NY. They were married here in late 1868.

 

STEPHEN PUTMAN  Florida, Montgomery County

He is a cabinet maker, 27 NY, Sarah Ann Herrick, his wife, 26 NY and Frank 4 NY. He is a son of David Putman and Nancy Dodds, and was born in West Charlton, Saratoga County. He married Sarah in Amsterdam November 4, 1862. They are here still in 1880.

 

G. V. (GARRET VICTOR) PUTMAN  Florida, Montgomery County

Been here forever. He is now 77 NY, his son John 35 NY and also here is the family of Richard Davis. Richard is 35 NY, Theodore 10 NY, Garret 8 NY, Richard 4 NY. They were living here in 1860, but since then Garret’s wife Mary Hanson has died in 1866 as has Richard’s wife Catalina Putman in the later 1860s.

 

PETER W. (WILLIAM) PUTMAN  Glen, Montgomery County

He is a commission agent and is now 52 NY, his wife Mary Ann Feeter (Veeder) is 55 NY. He is a son of William Putman and Harriet Coyne. Peter married Harriet Freeman here in Glen in 1838 and she died in 1845. He then married Mary Ann in 1846. Kids are all gone now. He’ll be in Fultonville in 1880.

He is now 82, Nancy Ann Veeder 81. He is now ‘without employment’ and about time. They still live with their daughter Rebecca and her husband Horatio Voorhees.

He is now a house carpenter 44 NY, Catherine (Campbell I think) 34 and Hattie 3 NY. He is Ebenezer junior and was here in 1860. He was born in Johnstown, now in Fulton County. They will be in Fultonville in 1880.

He is now 59 NY, Eliza C. Martin 55 NY, John W. 23 NY, Susan G. 21 NY, and Hattie F. 20 NY. He is a son of John Putman and Mary Schenk.

He is a butcher, 36 NY, Catherine 33 NY, Carrie 4 NY and Blanche 1 NY. Also here are John S. Putman 27 NY who I think is the son of Abraham Putman junior from Glen, and an Alice Putman 11 NY who I have no ideas on. This John is a son of John Lewis Putman and Mary Schenk and was home with them here in Glen in 1860. John will have a new wife, Adelia, in 1880 and 1900, and will die in Amsterdam in 1906.

 

VICTOR A. (ABRAHAM) PUTMAN  Glen, Montgomery County

He is a farmer 47 NY, Emeline Van Horne 48 NY. Also here are their daughter Anna P. Cady 28 NY and her son Putman E. Cady 8 NY. She was married to Edwin Cady who died here in 1868. He is a son of Abraham Victor Putman and Maria Vedder from Glen. There is also a Sophia Snyder 58 NY with them. No idea who she is. They will be here again in 1880.

 

JOHN V. (VICTOR) PUTMAN  Glen, Montgomery County

He is a son of the above Victor, and was with them in 1860. He is 26 NY, Mary Katherine Van Buren his wife 24 NY. Then there is Carrie Putman 23 NY. Don’t know who she is, she is not a sister though She is probably his daughter age 3, as that Carrie is 13 in 1880. John and Mary were married here September 6, 1864. He will be here till he dies June 14, 1909.

He is a laborer 33 NY, Betsy A. 34 NY, Charles M. 12 NY. His folks, Richard P. 54 NY and Harriet Hedded 48 NY are with them. They are all over from Ephratah in Fulton County.

It is a he 30 NY and a schoolteacher. This might be Fisher’s son Linus Putman. Age about right. If so he was with his dad in Amsterdam in 1860.

He is a son of Peter Derrick Putman and Maria Eacher from Ephratah, Fulton County. They were in Aurora, Kane County Illinois in the late 1850s and in the 1860 census and then came back here when the Civil War broke out I guess. Eliza will be widowed here with the kids in 1880.

He is Mahlon Ralph Putman, born in Glen. He is 25 NY. Also here are his mother Jane Voorhees Putman 68 NY, Abraham Putman 53 NY, and a Rebecca Putman 10 NY. He is a son of Ralph Lewis Putman of Johnstown and then Glen. Ralph just died here September 19, 1869. Not sure who either Abraham or Rebecca are. He’ll be marrying in about 1874, and be here still with mom in 1880.

He is a farmer 46 NY, Amanda Dockstadder his wife 38 NY, Lena 18 NY, Mary E. 16 NY, Josephine 14 NY, Amasilla 12 NY, Giles 10 NY, Catherine 9 NY, Martha 7 NY, Frances 4 NY and Elmer 1 NY. Stephen Philip Putman is a son of Philip Victor Putman and Elizabeth Kring of Root, Montgomery County. They were married in 1851 and have barely wasted a year without kids. He will be widowed here in 1900 and will die here in 1906. She will die here in 1884 probably of sheer exhaustion.

She is 14 NY and lives with a Near family. She is a daughter of Samuel Osborne Putman, and was at home here in 1860.

Johannes/John Ralph Putman is a son of Abraham Janse Putman and Hannah Osborne and was born in May 1825 and will die in Charleston, Montgomery County May 21, 1905. Mary was born December 18, 1826 and will die here in Root December 21, 1891. They are here through the 1880 census.

He is a produce dealer 44 MA, Ellen Smith his wife is 38 RI and their son Sydney is 13 NY (should be RI). They have a servant Lee something 35 DE. Avery was a son of Ebenezer Putnam (1503) and Tryphena Bassett from Holden, Worcester County. He first pops up in Boston single and boarding. He married Ellen L. Smith in Providence, Rhode Island September 28, 1854. In 1860 he was down here or someplace and Ellen and Sidney were back in Providence. In his book, Eben Putnam says “Who was Avery D. Putnam, assaulted 26 April 1871, by William Foster in New York. Putnam died on the 29th. Foster was hung 21 March 1873.” Interesting. In 1880, Ellen and Sidney are back in Providence with her folks Scott and Ada Smith. Ellen will die there May 25, 1885 at age 53. Sidney will die there August 3, 1883 at age 25. Avery was a son of Ebenezer Putnam (1503) and Tryphena Bassett from Holden, Worcester County.

She must have been somewhere as they were married in Albany in 1853. He is number 1413, a son of David Putnam (553) and Jeanette Angus of Albany. William was born there July 5, 1819 and will be here in NYC till he dies December 29, 1899. Too bad, missed the 20th Century by only two days.

He is a carriage trimmer, 42 NY, Elizabeth 30 NY and Anna 10 NY. His full name is James Daniel Putnam, but I don’t know who his folks are. They are here in 1880 and 1900, and Elizabeth is widowed here in 1910 and 1920 living with her then married daughter Anna.

He is a merchant 36 NY, Ellen F. is 34 MA. They are here again in 1880. He is a son of Thomas H. and Harriet Putnam. This family is a part of the ‘Other’ New England family, the one out of Yorkshire County, England. His folks were from Connecticut and then Delaware County, NY where John was born. They then moved to Holliston, Mass. when John was 1 and they were there in 1850. John will be in Los Angeles by the 1900. Ellen will be widowed there in 1910 and 1920.

He is a laborer 55 MA. His wife Caroline Cahoo is 35 NY. At home are John 18 NY, Sarah 16 NY, Amos 14 NY, Nathan 12 NY, Jennie 5 NY and Joseph 6/12 NY. He is Leonard Miller Putnam a son of Amos Putnam (1498) and Susan Miller of Sutton and later Ludlow, Massachusetts. Leonard was born in Ludlow August 19, 1815. Caroline is his second wife and they were here in 1860 and will be in 1880. They will next move to Jersey City, New Jersey in about 1881, where he will remain until his death October 12, 1884. Caroline will die in Brooklyn March 29, 1896.

He is George Haven Putnam, and was born in London, a son of this George Palmer Putnam and Victorine Haven. His father founded G. P. Putnam publishing, and young George will be taking it over soon. George and Rebecca were just married here in July 1869. She will die here in 1895, and George will be here with a new wife Emily Smith in 1900.

He was born here March 4, 1814. He is still alive in 1891 living in New York City. He married Catherine DuBois in Buffalo on November 1, 1838. She died in 1840. He married his present wife, Pauline E. C. Chalet in 1843. They are here in 1880 too.

I think this is his dad at age 70. Handwriting was bad in those times. 2 and 7 look identical. On the other hand, there is a Tarrant Putnam here in 1900 at age 48 who could be this guy. She is 76 and lives with a Carpenter family. She is Hannah Adams, widow of Peter David Putman who died here October 17, 1867. She will die here herself March 17, 1876. Dutch line.

He is David and Nancy’s son, and they were in Lee with his dad in 1860. He is now 46 NY, Almeda M. 43 NY and their daughter Della is 14 NY. Also here is their other daughter Stella 18 NY, her husband Hamilton Babcock 22 NY and daughter Hallie 3/12 NY.

He is listed as Mathias, but is Nathan who has been here forever. He is 66 NY a machinist. He lives with Lewis and Ellen Peete. His wife Rachel McMillan has died, and he is living with his daughter Ellen. In 1880, he will be in La Fayette, Indiana at age 76, and will have his son James C. with him. James is presently in Utica.

He is 60 NY, Nancy Bradley 50 NY. He is David Peter Putman, son of Peter David Putman and Hannah Adams. He was born in Western, Oneida County May 17, 1810. Nancy Bradley is his third wife. They were married here in October 1858.

He was here in 1860 too. He is now 43 NY, Olivia 45 NY, a daughter whose name still looks weird, Argence now, 20 NY, Romain 15 NY and Elizabeth 9 NY. Also here is Elizabeth Sherman 73 CT, who is probably Olivia’s mom.

Albert and the two girls will be here alone in 1875. Albert Putnam is the son of Sidney Putnam and Julian Ann Hamlin and was born in Augusta on 10 Jan. 1840. Albert and the two girls will later be living with their grandparents in Augusta in 1880. His line is Alfred > Sidney > Frederick > Charles > Eleazer > Eleazer > John > John. New England Family.

He is number 3122, a son of the following Nathaniel Putnam who still lives next door on the same farm. He will die February 21, 1891. Sarah will be widowed here in 1900 and 1910.

He has finally retired, and is 84 NY, Betsy Wheeler his wife 83 NY. Betsy will die here May 20, 1871. Nathaniel will die here March 6, 1876.

He was born in Rome May 18, 1832, and married Sarah Thompson here about 1854. He will die here December 30, 1872. Sarah was born in 1827 and will die here July 28, 1892.

 

GEORGE WASHINGTON PUTNAM  Trenton, Oneida County

He is 38 NY, Polly Ann Cole 34 CAN, Flora E. 12 IL, Amanda 8 IL, Eva 4 CAN and Georgiana 3/12 NY. He is a son of Sewell Putnam, born here in Oneida County. He married Polly in Athol, Ontario in 1856, went to Bureau County, Illinois with two brothers, then went to Athol, Ontario and were listed there in the 1861 Canadian Census, and then came full circle back here in about 1868. They will be here the rest of their lives now.

He is number 1727, a son of Asa Putnam (718) and Anna Collins of Brattleboro, Vermont. He is now 83 VT and has his daughter Hester 39 NY still living with him.

He is a son of Philip Putnam and Lucretia Noble from Lyme, Jefferson County. Eli was born in Montgomery County in 1815. Dutch family. They were in Boonville, Oneida County in 1860 and will be back there soon. Elizabeth will die there in 1876 and Eli in 1878. All the kids are in Boonville in 1880. Clara Gertrude is a dressmaker. Candace and Sarah are teachers.

He is now 69 CT, Eliza 67 NY, Henry 42 NY, Charles 39 NY, Abby Watkins 32 NY, her daughter Abby Watkins 5 NY, Margaret Lloyd 18 NY and Samuel Putnam 30 NY. Charles wasn’t around in 1860, Abby and Sam are his kids, no clue as to who Margaret is. Actually still no clue as to who Samuel himself is.

She is 72 NY and has a Maria Putnam 1 NY with her. She is Anna Vrooman, the widow of David Putman, and was here with her son Stephen in 1860.

He is a hardware merchant, 37 NY, Mary 35 NY, Hiram 14 NY. Also there is Mary de Monfreddy 65 NJ, her mother. Edward Augustus is Hiram’s son and was here in 1860 as well. He will be here in 1880, and also listed in a hotel in Canton, St. Lawrence County in 1880 as well. Traveling I guess.

He is a clothing clerk, 33 NY, Mary A. Richmond 28 NY and Minnie 4 NY. They live in a hotel. They are here in 1880 and 1900. Pretty sure he is a son of William Putnam and Mercy Hopkins and was at home in Herkimer, Herkimer County New York in 1850 and living with the Richmond family in Little Falls, Herkimer County in 1860.

He and Adelpha will be in Caldwell County, Missouri in the 1880 and he will be farming there. Intersting, Florence will be there as well in 1880, but listed as a stepdaughter of J. D. and Julia Cox. Probably just living there.

He is a farmer 58 NY, Catherine Vosburg, his wife, 54 NY, John 27 NY. Then we get what are listed as his parents Catherine 77 NY and James 76 NY, then there is Lewis 9 NY and Elizabeth 12 NY. Lewis, and the above James are sons of Johannes Lewis Putman and Margaret Becker from Montgomery County. No clue as to Catherine, James and the others. They well may be Vosburgs, or some kinda kinfolk. Anyway, Lewis was born April 11, 1811 and will die April 17, 1880 and is buried in East Pembroke, Genesee County.

 

JOHN J. PUTMAN  Yates, Orleans County

He is 52 NY, Hannah Ann Spaulding 44 NY, Nancy 18 NY, Oscar J. 16 NY and Albert 20 NY. Albert is not a son, but is obviously kinfolk. John J. is a son of Johannes (John) Putman and Magdalena Vrooman. He was born in Schenectady on March 27, 1816. They were in Amsterdam, Montgomery County in 1850, and in Niagara County in 1860.

 

LEWIS PUTMAN  Constantia, Oswego County

He is listed ‘about 40’ NY, Louvina (Melvina in 1860) 28 NY, Levi 10 NY, Charles 7 NY, Clarissa 5 NY and Albert 2 NY. He is a laborer, and is about 32 if the 1860 is correct. They are in Olmstead County Minnesota in 1875 and 1880.

 

CORNELIUS PUTMAN  Constantia, Oswego County

He is a farm hand, 68 NY. He is a son of John P. Putman and Rebecca Schenk, Dutch family. He was married in Onondaga County in 1850, and alone in 1860 there in 1860.

 

CLARINDA PUTNAM  Phoenix, Oswego County

She is Clarinda Crosby, now the widow of Samuel Putnam. She is 67 NY and lives alone. They were here in 1860 and earlier, and will be here in 1880.

 

AMANDA PUTMAN  Schroeppel, Oswego County

Amanda is 40 NY, Eugene 16 NY. Now, in 1860 she was in Cayuga County with a daughter Alta 6, and will be here with Alta and her husband in 1880. I think this is a ‘typo’ and it is really Alta here with her now. They are then in Syracuse in 1900 and in Cortland County by 1910. No ideas as to her husband.

 

HORACE PUTNAM  Volney, Oswego County

He is a clerk in a store, 21 NY, Florence 20 NY. They live with a Loomis family. He would be the son of Prosper Putnam from Rome, Oneida County as shown in 1860.

 

DAVID L. (LEWIS) PUTNAM  Decatur, Otsego County

He is now 85 NY, Hannah Lettis his wife 75 NY. Their son David 31 NY is here, along with his wife Isabella McKinley 27 NY, and kids Morris 7 NY, Ellen 4 NY and Lewis 1 NY. They have been in the County a long time now, moved over from Montgomery County. David will die here in 1872, Hannah in 1873.

He is the eldest son of David and Hannah and named for his grandfather. He is 54 NY, Jane Shore 43 NY, Ella 17 NY and Flora 7 NY.

He is 35 NY, Margaret 30 NY. They were in Roseboom in 1860.

He is 25 NY and living with a Schutt family. He is Philip and Catherine’s son. He will marry Anna Minerva Moore here in 1871. They will be here in Otsego County through 1900 and then just over the border into neighboring Delaware County by 1910.

He is another of Philip’s sons. He is 20 NY and with a Denenbeck family.

 

PHILIP PUTNAM  Decatur, Otsego County

Still here. He is 58 NY, Catherine Keller 50 NY, William 17 NY and Charles 10 NY. He’s a son of John and Margaret Putman. He is the first in this Dutch line to start using the Putnam spelling.

 

GARRETT PUTMAN  Hartwick, Otsego County

He is a farmer 37 NY, Samantha Bowe his wife 40 NY, William 15 NY and Eugene 5 NY. He was here in 1855, 1860 and will be in 1880. He will be in Staten Island, Richmond County New York at age 68 in 1900 and 1910 with his son Eben and his wife Marion and their kids. He will die there April 4, 1915. He is a son of William Garrison Putman and Maria Gardinier from Genesee County.

She is 23 NY and lives with a Lenenhart family.

 

JOHN PUTMAN  Middlefield, Otsego County

He is 38 NY, Augusta Markes 36 NY, Fayette 4 NY and Alfred 7/12 NY. They were here in 1855 and 1860 and will be in 1880 too. He is a son of David Ludwig Putman and Hannah Lettis and was born in Otsego March 7, 1832 and will die right here in Middlefield September 8, 1883. He’ll be here forever on. His line is John H. > David > Ludwig (Lewis) > David A. > Arent J. > Jan.

She is 51 NY and lives with F. L. Gilbert and his wife Helen.

He was born here. He is now 50 NY, Perlina Brown, his wife, 54 NY. He is a son of Johannes David Putman and Catalina “Caroline” Winnie. This line goes William > Johannes > David > Arent > Jan. Dutch family.

Another of John’s sons. He is now 60 NY, Ann Lowe his wife 56 NY, and Helen 22. Also here are their daughter Alvira 31 NY, her husband Asa Atkins, and a bunch of kids. They’ll be here in 1880.

 

JOHN F. PUTMAN  Roseboom, Otsego County

He is a farmer 56 CAN and his wife Elizabeth 53 NY Also here are their son Albert H. 25 NY, his wife Franky 22 NY, and their kids Charles 5 NY and Willie 2/12 NY. He keeps moving around the County. He was in Hartwick in 1850 so see that listing for his line. They will be moving shortly to Kane County, Illinois.

He is 27 NY, Etta Moak 18 NY. He is a son of William and Perlina. They will be here in 1880 and 1900 too.

He is 19 NY and works on the Herrick farm. He is a son of Philip Putman and Catherine Keller. He was home with them in Decatur in 1860.

She is 24 NY and a servant with a Prinelle family. She is a daughter of Philip and Catherine from Decatur.

He is 24 NY, Josephine Bigelow his wife 19 NY. He is a farm laborer. He is a son of Philip and Catherine Putman from Decatur.

He is 35 NY and still a carpenter, but now with the railroad. He is a son of Elisha and Sophia Putnam of Albany. He has been here boarding a while now, and will still be in 1880.

He is now 83 MA and Azuba Morse 79 MA. They still live with Titus and Sarah Todd. See 1850 and 1860 for who they all are.  James will die here in a few months, and Azuba will die here in 1872.

She is 48 NY and lives with a Merriman family. She is Ruby Sweet Potter, widow of Winslow Putnam. See the 1860 entry for the whole story.

He is a farmer 31 NY, Jane Agnes Van Epps 29 NY. He lives next to his father David. Dutch family, see the 1850. George was the compiler of the early book on the Dutch Family, ‘The Genealogy of David Putman’ published in 1916.

 

DAVID PUTMAN  Charlton, Saratoga County

He is now back in town, after moving to Galway in the 1860. He is 65 NY and his wife Nancy Dodds is 63 NY. He has been in the county forever, a son of Isaac Putman and Hannah Paddock. He was born in Tribes Hill, NY on March 19, 1805 and married Nancy on June 18, 1831. This line (Dutch) is David > Isaac > David J. > Johannes V. > Victor J. > Jan.

 

PETER S. PUTNAM  Edinburg, Saratoga County

He is 28 NY, Betsy Wright 40 NY and there is Annie Wright 71 NY there. She is Betsy’s mom. He was in Fulton County in 1860. He is a son of Aaron Victor and Dorcas Putman from Johnstown. He will be here through the 1900 census.

 

AARON J. (JEFFERSON) PUTNAM  Greenfield, Saratoga County

He is 58 NY, Jane Ann Scott 60 NY, Aaron 23 NY, William D. 17 NY, Sarah 22 NY, and George A. 2 NY. He is a son of Aaron Putnam and Eunice Tooley and has been over in Warren County. The  gang was in Northumberland, Saratoga County in 1865. The son James and his wife are still there now.

He is 48 VT, Nancy M. Davis his wife 42 NY and Ada M. 12 NY. He is a son of Elijah Knight Putnam from Grafton, Vermont. They have been here since the 1840s.

 

WILLIAM PUTMAN  Moreau, Saratoga County

He is a sea captain 51 MA, Elizabeth 31 NY, George 7 NY and Mary 4 NY. He could be William Cheever Putnam, a son of Nathaniel Putnam and Betsy Waters of Danvers, Mass. He was born there April 22, 1818.

 

GEORGE W. PUTNAM  Moreau, Saratoga County

Archelaus’ son has been here a long time now. He is 66 VT, Laura 59 NY, Marcella 25 NY, Eveline 21 NY and Charles 19 NY. He and the kids are all going to be in Queensbury, Warren County by 1880 and Charles is married by then.

 

JAMES PUTNAM  Northumberland, Saratoga County

He is 25 NY, Angelita (Sarah Angelita Barker) 24 NY, and there is a Sarah Barker 63 NY here who is her mother. He is a son of Aaron Jefferson and Jane Scott from Warren County, who are listed above in Greenfield. James will be back in Queensbury, Warren County in 1880 and back here in 1900 through 1920.

 

ABEL PUTNAM  Saratoga Springs, Saratoga County

He is 57 VT, Hannah Parker Harris, his wife, 49 OH, Lizzie 22 VT and Sadie 13 VT. He is number 3422, a son of Abel Putnam and Lydia Gould from Londonderry, Vermont. They were there in 1850 and in Chester, Vermont in 1860.

 

ELVIRA PUTNAM PATTERSON  Saratoga Springs, Saratoga County

Elivira is the widow of William Lewis Putnam (Lewis’ son) who died here in 1860. She is now 42 NY and married to Robert Patterson 57 IRE. She has her two Putnam sons here, John 18 NY and James 13 NY. She lives in her old house right next door to Lewis and Betsy.

 

LORIN PUTNAM  Saratoga Springs, Saratoga County

Lorenzo Bradley Putnam is now 42 NY, Mary Frances Goslin 35 NY and her mom Eve Goslin 60 NY. He is a son of Lewis Putnam (1382) and his second wife Elizabeth Alcott. Lorin first had married Amelia Needham who has died. He then married Mrs. Mary Frances Jenkins (born Goslin). They will be here forever.

Gideon’s son is now 79 NY, Betsy Stillwell Allcott, his wife, is 69 NY. Also here is Estelle 18 NY. She is a daughter of Lorin Putnam and his first wife. Guess she decided to stay with the grandparents after Lorin remarried.

She Mary Watrous, and is 40 NY, Ellen 12 NY, Gemima (Genevieve) 10 NY and Sarah 8 NY. She is the widow of George Rockwell Putnam from here. They will all be here in 1880 living with her sister.

 

MARY PUTNAM  Saratoga Springs, Saratoga County

She is now widowed 49 IRE, and has John 24 NY, Henry 20 NY and Victor 15 NY. Mary Mooney was married to William Putnam here in 1860. I have a sheet that says William’s folks were Caleb Putman and Polly Gilchrrist from Tribes Hill, Montgomery County. William was born there in 1818 and will die in Saratoga Springs. The son John will marry Ellen Schryer and they will be in Detroit, Michigan in the 1880 census. Dutch folks.

Mervin Gideon is another of Lewis’ sons. He is a deputy sheriff 56 NY, Caroline McNally 53 NY and Laura 18 NY.

 

MARGARET PUTNAM  Saratoga Springs, Saratoga County

She is Margaret Fenlon, widow of Washington Putnam (1386), and was widowed here in 1850 and 1860 as well. She is now 66 NY, Alice her daughter is 27 NY. Also here is another daughter Flora 29 NY and her husband George McAmber 32 NY. Margaret will die here August 17, 1872.

 

HORACE L. (LYSANDER) PUTNAM  Stillwater, Saratoga County

He is 40 NY, Ruth Rogers Toms 32 NY, Charles M. (Mortimer) 9 NY, Frederick H. (Horace) 6 NY, Libbie F. (Elizabeth Frances) 3 NY and Willie R. (William Roscoe)1 NY. They were in Rome, Oneida County in 1860. He is a son of David Putnam and Nancy Alcott from Lee, Oneida County. That David was from Connecticut. They will be here in 1880.

 

CHRISTIAN PUTMAN  Duanesburgh, Schenectady County

He is 37 NY boarding with a Milmine family. He was living with them here in 1860 and 1865 as well, but his wife Maria Louisa Milmine was here then. These are her folks. In 1880 his wife Maria L. is with him. Not sure where she is now. He is a son of Mathias/Matthew Putnam and Nancy Ann Veder from Schenectady. Dutch.

He is 54 NY, Mary Ann Van Vranken 52 NY and Jacob 23 NY. He is a son of Harman Putman and Margaret Wheaton. He was here since 1850. See that entry for his line.

Eliza Maria is 59 NY, her mother Catherine is 87 NY. Catherine Van Vranken is the widow of Victor Jacob Putman from Duanesburgh. She and her daughter were here in 1860.

 

OLIVER PUTMAN  Rotterdam, Schenectady County

He is Oliver Sebastian Putman 39 NY, Catherine Elizabeth Mabie, his wife, 39 NY and Simon 7 NY. He is a son of Johannes (John) Putman and his first wife Magdalena Vrooman. He was born in Schenectady December 2, 1830 and married Catherine Christmas Day 1859. They are here again in 1880, and will be until he dies in 1906.

 

ANDREW (YATES) PUTMAN  Rotterdam, Schenectady County

He is another son of John and Magdalena. He was born here March 12, 1822. He married Eveline Angelica Mabie May 24, 1849. He is now 48 NY, Eve 39 NY, John 19 NY, Aaron 16 NY, and Jacob A. 8 NY. Also here is his sister Clarissa 43 NY. Eve will die here March 10, 1874. He will die here May 6, 1878. The kids will be around in 1880 and on into the 1900s.

 

SEBASTIAN PUTMAN  Rotterdam, Schenectady County

Another son of John and Magdalena. He is now 42 NY, Margaret Waddell, his wife, 41 NY, Margaret and Mary, twins, 10 NY, Sarah 7 NY and Frederick 3, NY. He was born here December 15, 1827 and will be here until he dies in 1904.

 

AARON PUTMAN  Rotterdam, Schenectady County

He is 64 NY, Nancy Hageman his wife is 62 NY and Elizabeth is 18 NY. He is Aaron Johannes Putman. He is a son of Johannes Putman and Magdaline Vrooman. He was born in Schenectady on November 10, 1805 and will die here in Rotterdam on September 8, 1874. He married Nancy in Amsterdam, NY on October 7, 1829.

 

JOSEPH PUTMAN  Rotterdam, Schenectady County

He is a son of the above Aaron and Nancy. He was home in 1860 and is now married to Martha E. Shofelt (September 10, 1862. He is 37 NY, Martha 28 NY, Pearl 6 NY and Minnie 6/12 NY.

 

JOHN A. (AARON) PUTMAN  Schenectady W1, Schenectady County

He is a coal dealer 41 NY, Catherine 32 NY, Aaron H. 9 NY and Sarah 6 NY. He is the eldest son of Aaron Johannes Putman, but the one I have no details on. They were in Ballston, Saratoga County in 1865.

 

ERNESTUS PUTMAN  Schenectady W2, Schenectady County

He has been here all his life, a son of Johannes and Magdalena Putman. He is now 59 NY, Elizabeth Marselis 59 NY. He will die here September 8, 1874. Elizabeth will be here until 1901.

 

HATTIE PUTMAN  Schenectady W4, Schenectady County

She is 21 NY and lives with Margaret Brower 65 NY. She is probably Aaron and Maria’s daughter, listed Etta in 1860.

 

AARON PUTMAN  Schenectady W4, Schenectady County

He is 55 NY, Maria Haight 56 NY, Anna 27 NY and Elizabeth 22 NY. Aaron Matthew Putman a son of Mattheus Putman and Nancy Ann Vedder of Charlestown, Montgomery. He married Maria here in 1838 and has been here ever since. She will be widowed here in 1880.

 

MARIA PUTMAN  Schenectady W5, Schenectady County

She is 46 NY and lives with James and Jane Cole. She will be here in 1880, also boarding. She is Maria Quilhot who is the widow of Francis Putman. Francis was a son of Peter Victor Putman and Mary Lepper from Amsterdam, Montgomery County. They were there in 1860. Maria will die here at the Home for the Aged in May of 1893.

 

ISAAC K. (KINNAN) PUTNAM  Dix, Schuyler County

He is 50 NY, Theodocia 45 NY, John M. 22 NY (actually CAN) and there is an Emma Strong 10 NY here too. He is a son of John Putman and Sarah Mumford. The family was from New Jersey then back to NY, and then went into Ontario. Isaac was ‘naturalized’ there in 1848. Dutch family. They were in Lockport, Niagara County in 1860, and in Ontario across the lake before that. Their eldest son James was born there. Isaac will be in Alleghany County in 1880.

 

EBEN PUTMAN  Orange, Schuyler County

He is 60 NY, Betsy (Elizabeth Townsend) 58 NY. Interesting. They were here in Tyrone (Steuben County then) in 1850, went to Missouri by 1860 and came back here in 1868. They will be in Steuben County again in 1880. He is a son of John and Jane Putman of Tyrone and New Jersey before that. Dutch family.

 

GEORGE P. (PHILLIP) PUTMAN  Orange, Schuyler County

He is a farmer, 54 NY, Elsie Smith 49 NY, Latham 15 NY and Oscar 10 NY. He is a son of Phillip Putnam and Ann Thurbor County. He was born on September 7, 1814. He was there in 1840 with his first wife Margaret Yerdon who died in 1845. He married Elsie in 1846. They were in Herkimer County in 1850 and 1860. They are here in 1880 and Elsie is widowed here by 1900. New York Dutch folks from Herkimer then back to Montgomery County.

 

LINUS PUTMAN  Orange, Schuyler County

He is 42 NY, Lemira Dyer, his wife, 37 NY, Zera H. a son 12. Also there are John Dyer 90 NY and Polly Dyer 63 NY. They are her folks. He is a son of Andrew and Submit Putman.

 

ANDREW PUTMAN (JR.)  Orange, Schuyler County

He is now 37 NY, Mariah Dyer 26 NY, twin girls Libbie and Lidia 2 NY and Fred W. 1 NY. They will be here in 1880. He is a son of Andrew and Submit Putman.

 

THOMAS PUTMAN  Tyrone, Schuyler County

He is 34 NY, Lucina  (Roxanna Brimmer, his wife) 23 NY, Mittie 3 NY, and Eveline 2 NY. Also here are his sister Euphena 38 NY and his mother Submit Caswell Putman 73 MA. His father Andrew has died here in 1864. He’ll be widowed here in 1880. Thomas was a veteran of the Civil War. His sister was married to Levi Allen who was killed in the Civil War.

 

GEORGE M. PUTMAN  Tyrone, Schuyler County

He is 25 NY, his wife Mirnelva Daniels is 18 NY and Mary J. 1 NY. He is a son of Jacob Putman and Louisa Corey. He was here with his folks in 1860.

 

ELLIS PUTMAN  Tyrone, Schuyler County

He is 24 NY, Anna Angeline Myers 27 NY and their son Myers 1 NY. He is a son of Peter George Putman and Bridget Ellis and was born in Starkey, Yates County. They will be here in 1880, and then off to Seattle, Washington. Ellis will die there in King County January 27, 1892.

 

ELLEN PUTMAN  Tyrone, Schuyler County

She is 18 NY and boarding. She is a daughter of Jonathan Putnam and was here in 1860. Folks are now in Yates County. She is the only non-Dutch person in the County.

 

LOUVINA PUTNAM  De Kalb, St. Lawrence County

She is 79 MA. She lives with Collins and Miranda Acres. Miranda 55 MA is her daughter. She is Lavina Livermore, now widow of Moses Putnam (2150). They were here in St. Lawrence County in 1860, and in Watertown just south in Jefferson County since the 1820s. They were originally from Sutton, Mass. In 1880, she will be living with her grandson Watson Acres. Moses died here a year ago on March 19, 1869. She will die here November 6, 1882.

 

DELIA PUTNAM  De Kalb, St. Lawrence County

She is 16 NY a school teacher. She lives with a Mathews family.

 

EDWARD PUTNAM  De Peyster, St. Lawrence County

He is Edward Alexander Putman, and was here in 1860. See that for the line. He is now 53 NY, Mehetable Anderson 44 NY, Abraham 23 NY, William 21 NY, Mary 19 NY, Charles 16 NY, Lucy 9 NY, Elisha 6 NY. Also here is Daniel McLean 76 Ireland. Dutch family.

 

CHRIS PUTNAM  Gouverneur, St. Lawrence County

He is a railroad agent, 30 NY, Harriet Rebecca Nichols 32 NY, Tilly O. (Orson) 3 NY and Eva 1 NY. His father John Putman 60 NY is here too. John Putman is a son of Philip Putman and Lucretia Noble. He has been in Lyme, Jefferson County for years. Came up here after his wife Dorcas Richardson died. In the next couple of years, he and Christopher will head out to Buffalo County, Nebraska and all will be there in the 1880 census. Dutch family.

He is Seth’s son and has been here for years. He is now 40 NY, Jane Corwin, his wife, 39 VT, Lewis H. 14 NY and Lucy C. 15 NY. Also here is his mother Nancy Rockwell Putnam 79 VT. His dad died in the Civil War.

He is a carpenter 48 NY (think should be CAN), his wife Sarah Sheldon is 39 NY, Emma 17 NY, Ida 15 NY, William 11 NY and Mary 8 NY. They were here in 1860 and will be in 1880. He is a son of Seth Putnam and Catarina Grawberger from Canada.

He is a farmer 23 NY, Olive Jane Hastings 17 NY. They live amongst a bunch of Hastings families. He is a son of Peter Putman and Mary Ann Mason. He was born here. His folks are coming up next.

He is now 71 NY (born in Johnstown), Mary Ann Mason 61 NY, William D. (David) 32 NY, Lucy (who will marry Hosea Church soon) 32 NY. He is a son of Johannes Ludwig Putman from Montgomery County.

JOHN C. (CARYL) PUTNAM  Potsdam, St. Lawrence County

He has been here since the 1820s, a son of Isaac and Mary Putnam. He is now 73 VT, Eunice his second wife 63 MA, Augusta 28 NY, Charles 30 NY. Also here is Louisa Putnam 75 VT, probably a sister.

 

BAINBRIDGE PUTNAM  Russell, St. Lawrence County

He is 54 MA, Nancy Burton 50 NY, Florence 21 NY and Charles 19 NY. He is a son of Moses Putnam (2150) and Lavinia Livermore of Watertown. He was in Champion, Jefferson County in 1850 and here in 1860. His folks were then. He’ll be here in 1880.

 

MARY PUTNAM  Russell, St. Lawrence County

She is 38 NY a servant with a Brown family. Harriet Brown 34 NY is her sister. They are daughters of Elijah Putnam (2151) and Parcis Livermore of Vienna, Oneida County. Both were at home there in 1850 as was their brother Brigham who lives next door.

He is 42 NY, Alice 38 CAN. A son of Elijah Putnam from Oneida County.

 

WILLIAM PUTNAM  Avoca, Steuben County

He is 42 NY, his mother Elizabeth Putnam is 82 NY. His sister Eliza 51 NY is finally married. Her Husband Abijah Olmstead is here. He is a son of the John Putnam who was here in Avoca in 1850. Still not exactly sure who that John belongs to.

 

HIRAM PUTNAM  Greenwood, Steuben County

He has been here forever now. He is 67 NH. Lucinda Stephens is 64 NY. He is number 2024, a son of Stephen Putnam (846) and Sarah Burton of Wilton, New Hampshire. They’ll still be here in 1880.

 

ALEX PUTNAM  Greenwood, Steuben County

He is Hiram’s son, and was living at home in 1860, now has his own place next door. He is 40 NY, Hannah Freeland, his wife is 33 NY, Mary E. is 13 NY and David 11 NY.

 

ALONZO PUTMAN  Jasper, Steuben County

He is 22 NY and boarding. He is a son of James Walter Putman, and was at home in Woodhull in 1860.

 

LEWIS PUTMAN  Prattsburgh, Steuben County

He is 24 NY, Lydia 19 NY and Aaron just born 1/12 NY. He is a son of Aaron Victor Putman. He was at home here in 1860. They are here through 1900.

 

ELISHA PUTNAM  Rathbone, Steuben County

He lists himself now as 68 MA, Narcissa Cook his wife as 34 NY, Caroline 8 NY, Elisha 4 NY and a girl C. N. (Mary) 2 NY. This time he says he was born in Mass, every other time it was New York. In 1880, he lists that he and both parents were from Massachusetts. Now, based on the age and Mass birthplace, he should be the son of Abner Putnam and Nancy Stearns, and was born in Shrewsbury, Mass March 11, 1802. They’ll be here in 1880.

 

M. (MARTIN) PUTMAN  Wayne, Steuben County

He is 29 NY, his wife Mary Roat is 28 NY and they have Aly 4 NY. He is a son of Peter George Putman and Bridget Ellis. He was born September 2, 1840 in Starkey, and was with his folks in Starkey, Yates County in 1860. He married Mary September 17, 1863. She will die in a few years and he will marry Ettie D. Rhodes in Michigan in 1879. Dutch family

This is a she 17 NY living with a Walsh family.

 

HENRY PUTMAN  Wheeler, Steuben County

He is 30 NY, Eleanor 25 NY. Also here is Sylvester Robinson 10 NY NY NY. He will change his name to Putnam and be here from 1880 through 1930. He is John Henry Putman, a son of George and Mary here in town. He and Ellen are here in 1880, and by 1900 he has a new wife Rose and they are in Avoca, Steuben County in 1900 and 1910.

 

GEORGE PUTMAN  Wheeler, Steuben County

He is now 63 NY, Mary 57 NY (should be 47), George W. 23 NY, and a Celia or Julia 18 NY. Living either here or next door is their son Richard 25 NY, his wife Anna Vrooman 23 NY and their son Nelson 8/12 NY.

 

ALONZO PUTMAN  Woodhull, Steuben County

He is 40 NY, Mary E. 36 NY, Elisha 19 NY, Charles 15 NY and Herbert 2 NY. They were here in 1860. He has been here most all his life. He is a son of Aaron Victor Putman and Mary Rose from here.

 

ARCHIBALD PUTNAM  Owego, Tioga County

He is 59 NY and manufacturers drills. Elizabeth Briggs his wife is 44 NY, and Virginia 22 NY and Lewis 8 NY. Here since the 1840s. Archie is widowed here in 1880. He is married to Elizabeth Briggs and his folks are from Vermont. He first married Gratia Adelia Evans October 2, 1838 in Bainbridge, Chenango County. She was born in Bainbridge in 1818 and died in Bainbridge October 12, 1840. Archibald and Elizabeth will be in Tioga County in 1850 and onwards. Still working on who his folks, and both are from Vermont. He was born there in 1810 and will die in Owego, Tioga County in 1894 and buried in the Evergreen Cemetery there.

 

FREDERICK PUTNAM  Owego, Tioga County

He is a son of the above Archie, and was at home here in 1850 and 1860. He is a painter 22 NY, Annie Courtwright 20 NY and Harry 1 NY.

 

EMMA (AMY) PUTNAM  Dryden, Tompkins County

She is 73 NY and is living with her son-in-law Joseph Borden 43 NY and married daughter Susan Borden 31 NY. Emma is Amy Clark, the widow of Calvin Putnam of Truxton, Cortland County, New York. Amy and Susan were living together in Cortland County in 1860, and 1865 and still are but now Susan is married. This is the last time that we see Amy. She will die on July 10, 1875 and does not appear in the 1875 census. Joseph and Susan (Putnam) Borden will be back in Cortland County and will remain there forever. New England Family.

 

E. G. (ERASTUS GAYLORD) PUTNAM  Ithaca, Tompkins County

He is 30 NY, a superintendent at Cornell University. His wife Mary Nichols Woodward is 25 NY. He is a son of Hamilton Putnam and Jeanette Cleveland, and was born in Hartford, Cortland County, NY December 23, 1833. He married Mary in Orange County, NY January 30, 1867. He will be here as Business Manager till about 1872, then will move to Elizabeth, New Jersey where he will be a health officer and then president of the Board of Education. He will remain there until his death in 1915.

 

ADAM PUTNAM  Hague, Warren County

He is a farmer 37 NY, Pauline Monroe, his wife, 36 NY, Arthur J. 13 NY, Aaron E. 12 NY, Czar (listed Rufus in 1860, and Czar in 1880 and 1900) 10 NY, Stewart 5 NY, Mary C. 3 NY and Ellen 1 NY. They were here in 1860 and will be in 1880. His parents were Aaron Johannes Putnam and Joanna Neff from Fulton County. His line is Adam > Aaron > John A. > Arent V. > Victor J. > Jan Putman.

 

SYBIL PUTMAN  Johnsburg, Warren County

Sybil Daily is the widow of Enos Putnam (number 2670, a son of Joshua Putnam (1195) and Lucy Lathrop of Bethel, Vermont). They were here in 1850, in St. Lawrence County in 1860 and now back here. He died here March 19, 1865. She is 65 VT, her daughter Elizabeth J. 15 NY. Also here are her son Francis Osmond 33 VT (a clergyman like his father), his wife Julia Weber Richardson 31 NY, Osmond D. (David) 8 NY, and Elliot R. (Richardson) 3 NY. He married Julia while they were living in St. Lawrence County. They and his mom will be here in 1880.

 

ENOS O. (ORLAND) PUTNAM  Johnsburg, Warren County

Another son of Enos and Sybil, and he lives right next door. He is a farmer 35 VT, Margaret Little, his wife, is 35 IRE, George G. 8 NY, Martha 2 NY. They also have a servant Mary Jones 22 ENG.

 

HETTIE PUTNAM  Queensbury, Warren County

She is 26 NY, her daughter Ella 8 NY. There is a Joubert family living with them.

 

EDWARD PUTNAM  Queensbury, Warren County

He is a stage proprietor 47 NH, Lois Swain, his wife, is 53 VT and Anna 9 NY. He is number 2561, a son of Elisha Putnam (1150) and Nancy Melville of Charlestown, New Hampshire.

 

THOMAS PUTNAM  Queensbury, Warren County

He is a boatman, 50 NY, Clarissa Sage 45 NY, Wilkins 18 NY, Cyrus 12 NY, Frances 8 NY and Willie 2 NY. They were in Corinth, Saratoga County in 1860, and here in 1850. He is a son of Aaron Putnam and the next listed Mary Case.

 

MARY PUTNAM  Queensbury, Warren County

She is 78 NY and lists herself as an ‘old lady.’ She lives with a Llewellyn family. She is Mary Case, Aaron’s widow, and was actually born in Vermont. Aaron was born October 24, 1779 in Temple, New Hampshire and died August 9, 1853 in Glen Falls here in Warren County. Mary is widowed here in 1855, 1860 and 1870. Mary will die in Glenn Falls September 11, 1877.

 

IRA PUTNAM  Stony Creek, Warren County

He is a laborer 34 NY, Louisa Guyette is 19 NY, William 12 NY, George 9 NY, Libbie 7 NY, Agnes 5 NY, Fred 3 NY. Also here is Sarah Stanton 77 NH. He is a son of Cornelius and Ann Putnam from Luzerne here in Warren County. In 1860, his wife was Betsy Hutchings. Louisa is his second wife. They will be here with more kids in 1880.

 

GEORGE PUTNAM  Warrensburg, Warren County

Another of Cornelius’ sons. He is now 39 NY, his wife Eliza Ann Wright, 31 NY, Adelia 9 NY, George 7 NY, Mary M. 4 NY and Sarah E. 2 NY. They were here in 1860 and will be in 1880 and 1900.

 

ELIZABETH PUTNAM  White Creek, Washington County

She is 73 NY and lives with Joseph and Hattie Grey. She is Elizabeth Dorr, widow of John Pope Putnam who died here in 1867.

 

HENRIETTA PUTMAN  Whitehall, Washington County

She was here in 1860, and still lives with her folks. She is now 40 NY, but suddenly has two sons that weren’t shown in 1860. They are Abijah 18 NY and Aaron 13 NY. Her folks are Abijah and Clara McFarland. No idea who the husband was.

 

EVELINE PUTNAM  Arcadia, Wayne County

She is 31 NY widowed, and lives on the Allerton farm. Eveline will be widowed here in Arcadia, Wayne County, New York with her folks Mead and Lavinia Allerton in 1865, 1870, 1875 and 1880. Then with just with Lavinia in 1900, 1905 and 1910 and by herself there in 1920 and she will die here May 7, 1928. Before she got married, she was with her folks in Manchester, Ontario County New York in 1840, 1850 and 1855. She was married to William S. Putnam, and in 1860 and they were with his folks in North East Township, Erie County Pennsylvania. He died and she moved back up here. Eveline was born in Manchester April 5, 1838. She was listed as an adopted daughter in 1955 when at home with them, and again in 1865 and 1870 when she went back home after William died. They are her folks, they adopted her it seems. She’ll be here with her mother Lavinia Allerton through 1910 when she is 72 and her mom is 99.

 

FRED PUTNAM  Galena, Wayne County

He is 22 ENG and a laborer on the Grenell farm.

 

LUCY A. PUTNAM  Galena, Wayne County

She is 56 NY and lives with a Clark Family. Spencer Clark is her brother. She and he will still be right here through 1900. She first pops up with her brother in 1855 and was listed as a widow. I have no clue as to her husband.

 

WILLIAM PUTNAM  Lyons, Wayne County

He is 20 ENG and boarding. Probably a brother of the above Fred Putnam in Galena.

 

JOHN W. (WESLEY) PUTNAM  Ontario, Wayne County

Frederick’s son is still here with his new wife. He is a farmer 45 NY, Dinah Hyman (listed here as Zena 34 Prussia. Also here is her brother Henry Hyman 17 Prussia. Living right next door is Anthony Seiman 60 Prussia. Also with Anthony are Catherine Hyman 36, Fred Hyman 28, Louisa Hyman 23 and Joseph 25, all born in Prussia. There is also an Anna Hyman 1 NY. This would be Dinah’s family and maybe a stepfather or uncle.

 

SOPHIA PUTNAM  Ontario, Wayne County

Sophia Fairman, the widow of George Putnam is now 81 MA and ‘Retired.’ She lives with her daughter Chloe Smith and her family, and was living here in 1860.

 

JARED PUTNAM  Ontario, Wayne County

He is 56 NY, Sarah Landon 56 NY, Eugene 23 NY and his wife Sophronia 19 NY. Eugene and Sophronia will be here through at least 1900. Jared is a son of George Putnam and Sophia Fairman from here in Ontario. Sally will be widowed here in 1880.

 

JAY PUTNAM  Palmyra, Wayne County

He is a farmer 50 NY, Maria Ellis his wife 45 NY, Eugene 8 NY, May 6 NY and Gertie 3 NY. Then there are Margaret Putnam 21 NY and Phebe Ellis, Mariah’s mom, 78 NY. Margaret is their daughter, then it looks as if he and Maria decided to start a second set of kids. He was in Monroe County in 1850 and 1860, but was born right here. He was born January 3, 1820 in Palmyra, Wayne County, New York. He is a son of Stephen Putnam and Dorcas Smith. Stephen was born in Tolland, Conn., Dorcas was from Massachusetts. Mariah will be widowed here in 1900.

 

JOEL PUTNAM  Rose, Wayne County

He has been here all his life, Cornelius’ son, and is now 44 NY, Eliza Alles is 38 England (Isle of Guernsey), Daniel (Douia Cornelius) 18 NY, Henry (Hervey) 13 NY and Wells 10 NY. They will be here in 1880 and 1900.

 

JULIA PUTNAM  Walworth, Wayne County

She is 37 NY and lives with a Holt family.

 

LINUS PUTNAM  Williamson, Wayne County

He is 35 NY, Ellen Ballard 27 NY, Charles 10 NY, and Mary 8 NY. He is a son of Jared Fairman Putnam and Sally Landon and was born in Ontario, Wayne County and there with his folks in 1850. His folks are there now and listed above. New England family Massachusetts to Connecticut to out here.

 

JOSEPH PUTNAM  Eastchester, Westchester County

He is a publisher, 34 ME, Alice 28 IL and they have Charlotte 1 NY. He is Joseph Robie Putnam, and was born in Houlton, Maine, a son of Sterne Putnam (#1804) and Hannah Townsend. He married Alice Harvey Whitney May 20, 1868, and they will be in Chicago, Illinois shortly and be in the 1900 census. They will get there about 1872 but aren’t indexed in 1880 as they should be.

 

EDWARD PUTNAM  Pelham, Westchester County

He is 30 NY and a clerk in the House of Correction.

 

ALBERT PUTMAN  Yonkers, Westchester County

He is 29 NY, Margaret 29 NY and James 2 NY. He lists himself as a retired banker. Guess he made a killing young. He and Margaret will be back in New York City in 1880 and she will be widowed there in 1900. He is a son of Albert and Elizabeth Putnam from Danvers, and was born in Brooklyn April 3, 1845. The elder Albert was a son of Thomas Putnam (2192) and Mary Fitts of Danvers. His dad died in the early 1850s, his mother and brothers are listed shortly.

She is 53 CAN and a domestic with a Managhan family.

 

ELIZABETH PUTNAM  Yonkers, Westchester County

She is 60 MA, Warren 35 NY, George W. 33 NY, Mary H. 25 NY and E. W. 32 NY. Her sons Warren and George are coal dealers. She is Elizabeth Cheevers Putnam, the widow of Albert Putnam from Danvers and then Brooklyn. Albert was a son of Thomas Putnam (2192) and Mary Fitts of Danvers, Mass. They were in West Orange, New Jersey in 1860. Elizabeth is Elizabeth Cheevers Putnam, daughter of Nathaniel Putnam and Elizabeth Waters of Danvers, Mass.

 

J. S. (JOHN SKINNER) PUTNAM  Attica, Wyoming County

He is still a dry goods merchant, and is now 46 NY, Caroline McCray his wife 44 CT, Edward H. 20 NY, Kate 17 NY, Frances M. 15 NY and James O. (Osborne) 12 NY. He married Caroline in Springfield, Massachusetts on August 11, 1847. He’s one of Harvey and Myra’s kids. They will all be in Hannibal, Marion County, Missouri in 1880. He’ll be with the railroad as will James. He will die and be buried back here on July 14, 1898. Carrie will be widowed in Minneapolis in 1900. Carry will die on January 6, 1906. Both are buried back here in Attica.

 

EDWIN PUTNAM  Castile, Wyoming County

He is 22 NY and a laborer on the Starr farm. He is Edwin Alonzo Putnam, a son of Sardis Putnam and Dorcas Starr from Livingston and then Cayuga County. The family here is part of his mother’s family.

 

LUKE PUTNAM  Orangeville, Wyoming County

He is listed as 70 MA, but it is really 80. He is now in the County Poor House. He’s number 1264, and been here for ages.

 

JOHN W. PUTNAM  Sheldon, Wyoming County

One of Henry’s kids, still a blacksmith but has again moved towns. He is now 40 NY, Betsy A. 33 NY, Lettie 14 NY and Frank (Adelbert in 1860, Frank in 1880) 12 NY. She will be widowed here in 1880.

 

HENRY PUTNAM  Wethersfield, Wyoming County

He is now 74 NY and boarding with Charles and Catherine Davis a few houses away from his daughter Roxilla Hammond and her family. Catherine is probably a daughter as well.

 

JACOB PUTMAN  Barrington, Yates County

He is 51 NY, a farm laborer, Louisa Corey 52 RI, Matilda 19 NY, Daniel 16 NY and William 10 NY. He is a son of Andrew and Submit Putman (Dutch), and has been in Schuyler County most of his life. He was in Orange there in 1860. They will be in Steuben County by the 1880.

 

PETER PUTNAM  Barrington, Yates County

He is a laborer 23 NY, Ann E. 21 NY. He is a son of Elijah and Harriet Putman from Wayne, Steuben County. Dutch.

 

MARY PUTMAN  Barrington, Yates County

She is 20 NY, a servant with a Disbrow family. She will be in Dundee in 1880 and living with her ‘mother’ Lydia Havens and Olive Disbrow then 78 NY. She may be a widow of some Putman. John and Dorcas Putman from Lyme, Jefferson County had a daughter Mary born in 1849 who married a Havens man. This may well be who she is.

 

P. G. (PETER GEORGE) PUTMAN  Starkey, Yates County

Still around. He is a farmer, 54 NY, Bridget Ellis his wife, 45 NY, Mira 16 NY, Arvilla 14 NY, Ogdon 10 (is really 12) NY, Mary 8 NY and Dennis 5 NY. More Dutch folks, a son of Peter Putman and Margaret Saunders.

 

JAMES R. PUTNAM  Starkey, Yates County

He is a son of Andrew and Submit Putman, and was in Steuben County through 1860. He is 49 NY a laborer, Elizabeth 29 NY, George 8 NY and Norman (James Norman) 5 NY.

 

C. PUTNAM  Starkey, Yates County

She is a girl 18 NY and a domestic with a La Feron family. She may be Charlotte Matilda Putman, daughter of Jacob and Louisa. She is also shown at home here with them. Or she could be someone else. No idea.

 

REV. J. (JONATHAN) W. PUTNAM  Torrey, Yates County

He is a Methodist Minister and like all these other guys was in Steuben County in 1860. Difference is that he is a son of Cornelius Putnam and Happy Miller and the only non-Dutch guy here in Yates County. He is now 55 NY, Caroline Sanford his wife 45 NY, Ella 18 WI, Wellington 11 NY and Hattie 7 PA. Ella was a child of his first marriage when he was in Grant County, Wisconsin in the late 1840s and early 1850s. Wellington, or Amos as he was listed in 1860 in Tyrone, Schuyler County, New York, is with Caroline. Caroline will be widowed with the kids in Ontario County in 1880.
